UNIT 1: RESPONSIBILITIES OF A REPORTER

Reporters shoulder the responsibility of thoroughly investigating, gathering, and disseminating information to the public. Their role encompasses researching and verifying facts, conducting interviews, and crafting compelling narratives that shed light on significant events or issues. It is crucial for reporters to adhere to ethical standards, maintaining objectivity and impartiality in their coverage.

Additionally, they bear the responsibility of giving due credit to original sources, ensuring transparency and acknowledging the contributions of others to the information they present. Legendary journalist and media mogul Walter Lippmann has famously stated, “The duty of a journalist is to give the facts as he sees them. The public will judge; it is for the jury to do that. But first, the journalist must provide the evidence.” Lippmann’s words underscore the journalist’s responsibility to present information objectively and allow the audience to make informed judgments. Being a reporter also means having great time management and organisational skills as a major part of this role is managing tight deadlines.

It is said that a reporter is both the eyes and ears of a news organisation. A reporter’s job is to keep the public informed by uncovering the truth behind stories.Reporter is eagle-eyed, committed, illuminating the world with all the happenings across the globe. They enlighten the public about the activities and create an impact on the life of people. A good reporter must take the responsibility for what he is writing. He must not spread misinformation especially in sensitive situations like an epidemic, a war, natural disasters etc. Editors assign important issues that concern the public, like corruption, to one or more reporters depending on the magnitude of the issue. The primary responsibility of investigating all facets of the issue lies with the reporter.

They need to draw attention to issues and events of news value and give voice to the voiceless that are marginalised. Pointing out the official negligence or incompetence, explaining social, political or economic trends, scrutinising the work of huge corporations or the government, international or national happenings, all comes under the wheelhouse of a reporter.

When writing for a particular newspaper a reporter should abide by the policies of that concerned news agency and respect the policies listed. However, in order to be a responsible reporter, one should be honest to their respective news agency and deny self-promotion of opinions.

According to the Reuters Foundation Reporter's handbook, an important role of a reporter in a democracy is to act as a buffer between the government & the public. It is a two-way Channel.

Some reporters may also work with people or organisations as undercover reporters to get crucial evidence for their stories. A media house can hold a reporter accountable for the information and reports they deliver. A media house may issue a corrigendum or retraction if they publish or broadcast false reports.

If they report a crime, they talk to police officials and witnesses before writing a story. A reporter also has to fit the report within the word count and finish preparation within a timeframe that an editor or producer may stipulate. If a reporter’s story could be sensitive, they may talk to an in-house legal team to check if they can publish it.

It’s essential for reporters to remember the privacy and the rights of individuals and institutions of which they write. Reporters usually avoid obtaining information through coercion, blackmail or bribery.

Reporter is also responsible for conducting interviews and also visiting the site of the incident personally to verify the information. Reporters must stay abreast of current events, trends, and developments and continuously update knowledge on the beat or subject area. Understanding and adhering to legal constraints, including defamation laws, to avoid legal issues.

Lastly, a reporter should be on time with their stories. When something important happens, people want to know about it quickly. So, reporters need to be fast in writing and sharing their stories so that everyone stays informed.
