She then brought out the loopholes in media coverage about sensitive issues such as child abuse. During the discussion, Dr. Kumari brought in a very crucial question that was eye-opening for the students - ‘Why are the victims given more attention than perpetrators?’ The second session focused on ‘Women’s Representation in Media’. She began with a detailed explanation of why the media matters as a whole. She then presented different advertisement examples to showcase how women were represented in the media to compare the nature of representation from then to now.

A vote of thanks was delivered to Dr. Archana Kumari by the students. The lecture was very informative, detailed, and above all, very helpful for the students.  The students expressed their gratitude to Dr. Vartika Nanda (TIC, Department of Journalism) for organizing the lecture.

Written by Jhanvi Negi and Anushree Mukherjee

Date: February 2nd, 2022

The second-year students (Batch of 2023) of the Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, attended a guest lecture by Dr. Amit Nagpal on 2nd February 2022.

Dr. Amit Nagpal is a veteran teacher and practitioner of social media storytelling. With a career in mass media spanning over two and a half decades, he is a leading voice in business storytelling and social media leadership. He stirred a creative discussion highlighting the impact of one’s daily social media consumption, and the type of content that is consumed by people on a daily basis. The difference between ‘reaction’ and ‘response’ was explained in detail using a variety of real-life as well as hypothetical examples.

The students presented their views on how a sensitive but significant topic should be reported in the media. A parallel was drawn and explained among different media organizations which use different approaches when it comes to reporting sensitive cases. In this context, Dr. Nagpal discussed the significance of adhering to the journalistic code of conduct, ethics, and organizational norms. The distinction between ‘collectivistic’ and ‘individualistic’ culture in the workplace was also discussed in detail, specifically pertaining to the difference between ‘organizational loyalty and ‘individual loyalty’ in the workplace in today’s multimedia organizations.

The lecture ended with a vote of thanks given to Dr. Amit Nagpal by one of the attending students. Media Trial
Written by Vidhi Gupta and Anushree Mukherjee

Date: 16- 02 -2022

The second-year and first-year students (Batch of 2023 & 2024), Department of Journalism Lady Shri Ram College for Women attended a guest lecture on ‘Media Trial’ on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, by Anushree Mukherjee, a final year student of Journalism at Lady Shri Ram College for Women.

The lecture commenced with a detailed discussion about the meaning and scope of media trial. The similarities and differences between a court trial and a media trial were explained using the various laws and regulations prevalent in society. The media’s right to ‘Freedom of Speech and Expression' was discussed in contrast with the right of a suspect to receive a ‘Fair Trial' before the judicial system. The clash between both due to sensationalist media intervention in high-profile cases was understood as the negative side of media trials. She elucidated that being a student of journalism, it is necessary to keep aside the commercial factor while reporting cases of crime and maintain journalistic ethics of fairness, balance while removing circumstantial bias. The explanation was accompanied by examples and cases like the Jessica Lal case, Sushant Singh Rajput case, and Arushi Talwar case. Later, she touched upon the factors that are affected by media trials, such as judicial fairness and individual rights. Using examples, the students understood that the public, as well as the judiciary, are susceptible to form biases due to media’s sensational narratives, and the impact it has on the proceedings of the case. At last, the media trial that ensued during the double-murder case of Arushi Talwar and Hemraj was discussed in detail.

The lecture was followed by a doubt session where students asked their queries and shared their own knowledge about the topic. Dr. Vartika Nanda further enlightened students with insights about the same. Students also discussed the nature of media representation and interpretation as shown in movies, books, and shows during high-profile criminal cases.

At the end of the lecture, the students thanked Anushree for explaining this important topic to the students. The session was interactive and fruitful for the students. The students expressed their gratitude to Dr. Vartika Nanda (TIC, Department of Journalism) for organizing the lecture.
