अँधेरों से उजालों तक (Andheron Se Ujalon Tak) : Ministry of Home Affairs: Government of India: September, 2026

Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India | September 2026

अँधेरों से उजालों तक (Andheron Se Ujalon Tak) is a landmark literary anthology comprising writings by prison inmates from across India. Published by the Rajbhasha Vibhag (Department of Official Language) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, the book was formally released on 14 September 2026 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 6th All India Rajbhasha Sammelan held in Mumbai. The publication reflects the government's commitment to reformative justice and recognizes the transformative power of creative expression among incarcerated individuals.

The Department of Official Language conceived this initiative to provide a national platform for marginalized prison voices while advancing its mandate of promoting Hindi through socially meaningful and innovative interventions. The anthology presents a rich collection of Hindi poems, essays, memoirs, and reflective prose written by prison inmates, documenting their emotional and psychological journeys from guilt, isolation, and despair toward self-reflection, learning, rehabilitation, and hope.

The 315-page volume opens with THREE special essays authored by distinguished contributors working in the field of prisons and criminal justice: Professor Vartika Nanda, Founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation and Professor at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, Sunil Kumar Gupta, retired Law Officer from Delhi Prisons and Padmini Singh, Prosecution Director. These introductory essays are followed by a diverse body of writings contributed by prison inmates from different states of India.

Vartika Nanda's essay explores the transformative role of education, art, and creativity in prison spaces, drawing extensively upon the experiences and impact of Tinka Jail Radio. Her article highlights how communication platforms, creative expression, and cultural participation can restore dignity, strengthen self-esteem, encourage learning, and facilitate social reintegration among incarcerated populations. Through examples from Tinka Jail Radio, the essay demonstrates how prisons can become sites of dialogue, self-discovery, and meaningful rehabilitation rather than merely institutions of confinement.

As a collective work, Andheron Se Ujalon Tak stands as a significant testimony to the human capacity for change. By bringing together inmate writings and expert reflections on prison reform, education, and rehabilitation, the anthology humanizes incarcerated individuals and foregrounds literature as a powerful medium for personal transformation, social inclusion, and restorative justice.
