 Vartika Nanda’s ‘J Se Jail’ Explores the Human Realities of Prison Life

Book released by Supreme Court Judge Justice Sandeep Mehta at IGNCA, with speakers highlighting prison reform, rehabilitation and the experiences of inmates

Elderly & terminally Ill prisoners

The Supreme Court has directed all States and Union Territories to put in place, within three months, a uniform policy governing the premature release of elderly and terminally ill prisoners, observing that such inmates are entitled to a humane and time-bound mechanism for remission or early release on compassionate grounds.

A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta directed that every State policy must clearly lay down the eligibility criteria and procedural framework governing such releases and be framed and implemented in coordination with the respective State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs).

DASTAK

While making this newsletter, we learnt and understood several things. We learnt how to work as a team despite our differences. We learnt how to coordinate with one another and respect the opinions of our team members. We learnt how to present information in an interesting and educational way. Through this newsletter, we were also able to sharpen our creative and analytical skills. It also strengthened our understanding of the concepts we learnt about in class. It further helped us realise the purpose of a newsletter better.

THE FOURTH VOICE

Through this project, we were able to take our understanding a step forward, beyond the theoretical concepts. We gained hands-on experience in making a newspaper, which required extensive research and the skills to collect and filter information. We studied prominent newspapers in order to understand their layout and design. We referred to The Hindu to get a basic idea of the byline and dateline. We studied the formatting of headlines and stories from Hindustan Times and referred to The Times of India for the front page.

We understood that news production is not just about collecting information, but also about presenting it in a manner that makes it easy to comprehend. At the same time, we learnt how to consolidate information, filter out relevant facts, and make selections through a journalistic lens. Through this process, we also learnt the skill of presenting nuanced concepts with objectivity and balance. Beyond this, the project strengthened our time-management and organisational skills. Working with a deadline required us to plan and divide our work, while coordinating individual contributions.

Through this project, we studied various newspapers and developed an in-depth practical understanding of how news is selected, organised, and presented to a wide audience. The project also helped us explore our creativity and present information in a fun, engaging, yet purposeful way. We developed important skills such as planning, time management, working under pressure, coordination, collaboration, and organisation. Working as a team helped us apply classroom concepts in a practical setting, making us more confident, creative, and responsible in our approach to journalistic work.

The LSR Gazette

Our newsletter focuses on  some of the basic yet important concepts and topics  of journalism which includes :

1) Meaning of journalism and news.

2) The difference between hard and soft news.

3) And the role of embargo in reporting. 

3) Discussion on fairness, objectivity, and balance with examples.

 we have highlighted how these principles help journalists present information responsibly, accurately without unnecessary bias because it allows the readers to form their own opinions.

**LEARNINGS REPORT*:

1. Our first learning started with making of draft.This process taught us how to compile the ideas decide, the content and framework .

2. The most important thing we learned is importance of cooperation. We realised that creating newspaper was not just about completing our individual task,it was about listening each other. 

3. We got to learn about representation of idea's such as using eye catching  headlines, deciding the design of different pages etc.

4. Got to  research , revise and learn all the topics again so that it got settled in brain for forever.

LSR TIMES-  

BEHIND THE SCENES OF LSR TIMES.

As a part of our group assignment, our group of eight which had Janya, Prachee, Menang, Mehak, Ananya, Devanshi, Baani & Naina put out a newsletter called 'LSR TIMES'. It was built around the theme of our paper - 'Introduction to Journalism'. Sticking to the basics we mentioned topics we have actually studied including *what news actually is*, *the difference between hard news and soft news*, *a few definitions of news by scholars* and the *basic of news*. Alongside the core contents we also dedicated a page to Games like Sudoku & Crossword pages.

We had some major learnings.

*PROPER PRESENTATION*: We learned how to present facts in such a way that someone flipping through the newsletter actually understands it without getting bored. We had to constantly edit to know how much text was appropriate and where a visual or gap was required.

*TEAMWORK* One of the most important learning that we had was to work as a team and still put out the best of us individually. We figured out how to split the sections fairly so that neither of us is under or overworked. 

*PROBLEM SOLVING* We learned how to effortlessly blend ideas & writing styles of different members after major discussions and some disagreements.

*RESEARCH* We learned how to actually dig for the right information instead of just picking the first definition present. We constantly checked sources and learned the importance of authenticity before mentioning anything officially.

*TIME MANAGEMENT*- Another extremely important thing we learnt from this engaging group project is how to complete the work effectively within the given time frame and meet the deadlines given. Even though everyone had to work individually, we communicated and coordinated with each other, which helped us complete the project successfully and on time.

And at the end apart from everything, we learned as a group. Everyone of us had different skills. Some were extremely creative and some were great at writing, we ended up picking up skills from one another along the way everyday.

Putting this together taught us more than any assignment ever could.

Book Review: Ja se Jail

मैं दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी का एक छात्र हूं। मैने हाल ही में -ज से जेल- को अमेज़न से खरीदा था। इस किताब को मैने पूरा पढ़ा। मेरे लिए इसे पढ़ना नए तरह का अनुभव था। पहली बार जेल का मुझे वो अर्थ समझ में आया, जो मुझे आज तक नहीं पता था ।इस किताब में जेल की जिस हकीकत और वास्तविकता की कहानी कही गयी है वह बिल्कुल सजीव है। जेल शब्द से स्वाभाविक तौर पर सभी की धारणाएं एक ऐसे स्थान के बारे में होती है जहां बुरे लोग रहते हैं उसी धारणा को बदलता है- यह उपन्यास ज से जेल। 

इस किताब को पढ़कर एक अलग और अनूठी आजादी महसूस होती है। इस किताब में कई सीख ऐसी हैं जिनका जीवन के हर मोड़ में एक मायने है। किताब को पढ़ने के दौरान और बाद में भी मैंने कई परिवर्तन अपने अंदर महसूस किए। दुःख को देखने का नजरिया पहले की तुलना में कहीं गुना अधिक बदला। जीवन में मिले हर व्यक्ति और वस्तु का आभार व्यक्त करने का स्वभाव मेरे अंदर विकसित हुआ और गैर जरूरी बातों को नजरअंदाज करने की कला भी सीखी और अंत में सबसे बड़ी सीख मुझे इस उपन्यास से यह मिली कि बंधन किसी को बांधता नहीं बल्कि एक ऐसी परिस्थिति देता है जिसमें रहकर व्यक्ति पहले से कई गुना अधिक  बहतर और सफल होकर निकलता है। 

इसलिए में इस किताब को अपने अब तक के जीवन के उत्थान के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ समझता हूं।आप जब भी इस किताब को पढ़ेंगे तो अपने अंदर अवश्य ही ऐसे बहुत-से परिवर्तन महसूस करेंगे जिसकी शायद आपने कभी कल्पना भी न की हो। यह मेरा सिर्फ अनुभव ही नहीं, विश्वास भी है ।

DELHI, INDIA | 16 August 2026: The Special After Care Home for Children in Lajpat Nagar welcomed new residents today, young women who had been temporarily shifted from the Nirmal Chhaya After Care Home in West Delhi. Phoolon Ka Taron Ka, Sabka Kahna hai: Dehradun Jail Radio Celebrated Raksha Bandhan with Special Programming

Dehradun, Uttarakhand: “Phoolon Ka Taron Ka, Sabka Kehna Hai” from the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna was the star of its time. Released in 1971, few could have imagined that decades later this timeless melody would echo as an iconic song on the prison radio of District Jail, Dehradun in Uttarakhand. 

District Jail, Dehradun celebrated Raksha Bandhan today with a special edition of its prison radio broadcast, continuing a five‑year tradition of using radio as a tool for communication, healing, and reform in the jail.

Organising a news story means arranging information in a clear and logical order so that the reader understands the most important facts first. A news story usually follows the inverted pyramid structure, placing the most significant information at the beginning, followed by supporting details and background. This makes the story easy to read and ensures the key facts are communicated quickly.

आगरा, 31 जुलाई 2026 – भारत में कारागार सुधार और पुनर्वास की दिशा में विशेष पहल के तौर पर स्थापित आगरा जेल रेडियो ने अफने सात वर्ष पूरे कर लिए हैं. 2019 में जिला जेल, अगरा में स्थापित यह रेडियो स्टेशन कैदियों को अपनी आवाज़ और रचनात्मकता व्यक्त करने का मंच प्रदान करता है और जेल की दीवारों के भीतर परिवर्तन और सशक्तिकरण का प्रतीक बन चुका है।

National Forensic Sciences University, Ministry of Home Affairs, GOI: Training for prison officers from Mauritius: 30 July, 2026

Delivered a lecture on Case Studies in Correctional Administration: International Best Practices and Reformative Models at the National Forensic Sciences University, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The session formed part of a two‑week training programme on Correctional Administration designed for prison officers from Mauritius.

During the talk, I highlighted several reformative initiatives undertaken by the Tinka Tinka Foundation in Indian prisons, showcasing innovative practices aimed at communication needs and human dignity in the correctional settings. I also shared insights from my visit to Mauritius prisons in August 2018, undertaken during the 11th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan in Port Louis. These experiences provided a comparative perspective on correctional systems and underscored the importance of cross‑cultural dialogue in advancing prison reforms. 

My talk was primarily focussed on prison radio. Mauritius jails have not introduced this concept yet. I hope the journey of Tinka Tinka inspires them to rewrite a new chapter. Radio in Prison by NBT India and J se Jail by Prabhat Prakashan were also discussed.

Celebrating J se Jail – A Landmark on prison literature by Vartika Nanda released by Justice Sandeep Mehta, Judge, Supreme Court of India

J Se Jail, authored by Vartika Nanda was released at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). This book is published by Prabhat Prakashan. Chief Guest at the event was Justice Sandeep Mehta, Honourable Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The programme was chaired by Shri Rambahadur Rai, President of IGNCA, while Professor Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA was the Guest of Honour.  The programme was conducted by Shri Prabhat Kumar of Prabhat Prakashan.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Sandeep Mehta said that prisons and prisoners are often considered taboo subjects in Indian society. He congratulated Prof. Vartika Nanda for writing a book on such an important topic. He said that the way prison life has been presented in the book is remarkable and that the effort to bring hope and light into the lives of prisoners is truly inspiring. 

Justice Mehta read out a poignant story of a child from the book who stepped outside prison for the first time during her mother’s court hearing and saw a cat for the first time. The child mistook the cat for a “ghost”. He reflected on how J Se Jail brings readers face-to-face with the pain and realities of prison life while highlighting the importance of reformative justice.

Chairing the programme, Shri Rambahadur Rai described the book as an excellent novel from the perspective of an ordinary reader. He said that Prof. Vartika Nanda has written the book to present prisons as places where learning and positive change are also possible. Sharing memories from his own period of imprisonment, he remarked that if political prisoners had continued to be present in jails, prisons might not have become so frightening and prison reforms would have received greater attention. 

Guest of Honour Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi said that the book is not merely a novel but a living document of prison life. Sharing some of his own experiences related to prisons, he observed that one can truly understand prisons only by seeing them from the inside, and that such an experience changes one’s perspective completely.

Speaking about the journey of writing the book, Prof. Vartika Nanda said that all the characters in the novel are inspired by people she met in different prisons. She shared that she had visited many prisons and had never returned empty-handed. She carried back with her the sadness, pain, and struggles of the inmates. She described prison as her greatest teacher, saying that it had given her invaluable experiences and had made her stronger and more capable. Prof. Vartika Nanda made an appeal: “After reading this book, make sure it reaches someone in a barrack.”

Despite protests in the city, the auditorium was fully packed. A Tinka Tinka exhibition, showcasing creativity and reform in prisons was also displayed on the occasion. 

The programme was conducted by Shri Prabhat Kumar of Prabhat Prakashan, who also delivered the vote of thanks. The event was organised by the Kalanidhi Division of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Ministry of Culture.

'ज से जेल' पुस्तक विमोचन कार्यक्रम

‘ज से जेल’- जेल की जिंदगी का एक ठोस दस्तावेज है- जस्टिस संदीप मेहता

वर्तिका नंदा की जेल साहित्य पर एक अहम पुस्तक है जिसका विमोचन भारत के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के जज जस्टिस संदीप मेहता ने  किया।

किसी जेल तक जरूर पहुंचाइए- ज  से जेल

वर्तिका नंदा की लिखी पुस्तक 'ज से जेल का विमोचन इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय कला केंद्र (IGNCA)  किया गया। यह पुस्तक प्रभात प्रकाशन ने छापी गयी है। इस कार्यक्रम में मुख्य अतिथि भारत के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के माननीय न्यायमूर्ति  संदीप मेहता थे। कार्यक्रम की अध्यक्षता IGNCA के अध्यक्ष श्री रामबहादुर राय ने की, जबकि IGNCA के सदस्य सचिव प्रोफ़ेसर सच्चिदानंद जोशी विशिष्ट अतिथि थे। कार्यक्रम का संचालन प्रभात प्रकाशन के श्री प्रभात कुमार ने किया।

इस मौके पर बोलते हुए जस्टिस संदीप मेहता ने कहा कि भारतीय समाज में जेल और कैदियों को अक्सर वर्जित विषय माना जाता है। उन्होंने इतने अहम विषय पर पुस्तक लिखने के लिए प्रोफ़ेसर वर्तिका नंदा को बधाई दी। उन्होंने कहा कि पुस्तक में जेल की ज़िंदगी को जिस तरह से दिखाया गया है, वह काबिले-तारीफ़ है और कैदियों की ज़िंदगी में उम्मीद और रोशनी लाने की कोशिश  प्रेरणादायक है।

जस्टिस मेहता ने किताब से एक बच्चे की दिल को छू लेने वाली कहानी सुनाई, जो अपनी माँ की कोर्ट सुनवाई के दौरान पहली बार जेल से बाहर निकला और पहली बार बिल्ली देखी। बच्चे ने बिल्ली को "भूत" समझ लिया। उन्होंने बताया कि कैसे 'ज से जेल पाठकों को जेल की ज़िंदगी के दर्द और असलियत से रूबरू कराती है और साथ ही सुधारात्मक न्याय की अहमियत को भी उजागर करती है।

कार्यक्रम की अध्यक्षता करते हुए श्री रामबहादुर राय ने एक आम पाठक के नज़रिए से इस किताब को एक बेहतरीन उपन्यास बताया। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रोफ़ेसर वर्तिका नंदा ने यह किताब जेलों को ऐसी जगहों के तौर पर दिखाने के लिए लिखी है जहाँ सीखना और सकारात्मक बदलाव भी मुमकिन है। अपनी जेल की ज़िंदगी की यादें साझा करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि अगर राजनीतिक कैदी जेलों में बने रहते, तो शायद जेलें इतनी डरावनी नहीं होतीं और जेल सुधारों पर ज़्यादा ध्यान दिया जाता।

विशिष्ट अतिथि डॉ. सच्चिदानंद जोशी ने कहा कि यह किताब सिर्फ़ एक उपन्यास नहीं, बल्कि जेल की ज़िंदगी का एक जीता-जागता दस्तावेज़ है।  जेलों से जुड़े अपने कुछ अनुभव साझा करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि जेलों को असल में तभी समझा जा सकता है जब उन्हें अंदर से देखा जाए और ऐसा अनुभव इंसान का नज़रिया पूरी तरह बदल देता है।

किताब लिखने के सफ़र के बारे में बात करते हुए प्रोफ़ेसर वर्तिका नंदा ने कहा कि उपन्यास के सभी किरदार उन लोगों से प्रेरित हैं जिनसे वह अलग-अलग जेलों में मिली थीं। उन्होंने बताया कि वह कई जेलों में गईं और कभी भी खाली हाथ नहीं लौटीं। वह अपने साथ कैदियों का दुख, दर्द और संघर्ष लेकर आईं। उन्होंने जेल को अपना सबसे बड़ा गुरु बताया और कहा कि इसने उन्हें अनमोल अनुभव दिए हैं और उन्हें ज़्यादा मज़बूत और काबिल बनाया है। प्रोफ़ेसर वर्तिका नंदा ने अपील की: "इस किताब को पढ़ने के बाद, यह वादा करें कि यह किसी बैरक में रहने वाले व्यक्ति तक पहुँचे।"

शहर में विरोध-प्रदर्शनों के बावजूद, ऑडिटोरियम पूरी तरह भरा हुआ था। इस मौके पर जेलों में रचनात्मकता और सुधार को दिखाने वाली तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन के जेलों के कामों की एक प्रदर्शनी भी लगाई गई थी।

कार्यक्रम का संचालन प्रभात प्रकाशन के श्री प्रभात कुमार ने किया, जिन्होंने धन्यवाद प्रस्ताव भी पेश किया। यह कार्यक्रम संस्कृति मंत्रालय के इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय कला केंद्र (IGNCA) के कलानिधि विभाग द्वारा आयोजित किया गया था।

इससे पहले वर्तिका नन्दा तिनका तिनका तिहाड़, तिनका तिनका डासना, तिनका तिनका मध्यप्रदेश और नेशनल बुक ट्रस्ट से  प्रकाशित- Radio in Prison-  लिख चुकी हैं। वे भारत की जेलों में संवाद की जरूरतों को पूरा करने करने की अपनी अवैतनिक कोशिशों के लिए जानी जाती हैं। वे दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के लेडी श्री राम कॉलेज के पत्रकारिता विभाग में प्रोफेसर हैं।

1957 में आई थी फिल्म- प्यासा। निर्देशक, प्रोडूयूसर और अभिनेता थे- गुरुदत्त। इस नज्म को लिखा था- मशहूर शायर साहिर लुधियानवी (Sahir Ludhianvi) ने. संगीतकार थे-  एस.डी. बर्मन और आवाज़ थी हेमंत कुमार की।  यह कहा जाता है कि प्यासा गुरुदत्त की अपनी कहानी थी.  गुरुदत्त की जन्मतिथि पर पेश है यह विशेष प्रस्तुति.

क्या आप खुद हमेशा उदास रहते हैं ?  क्या आप यह तय नहीं कर पाते कि दुनिया सुंदर है या बदसूरत?   कि इस दुनिया में किसी पर आपका भरोसा क्यों कायम नहीं हो पा रहा  या फिर कि सफलता के पैमाने क्या हैं ?  अगर आप भी इन सवालों से जूझ रहे हैं तो चलिए हमारे साथ जेल की एक अनूठी यात्रा पर और महसूस कीजिए खुद में ऐसे बदलाव जो आपकी दिशा को शायद पूरी तरह से बदल दें.

 संसार की इस शाह का बस एक ही फसाना है एक धुंध से आना है, एक धुंध में जाना है। 

बी. आर. चोपड़ा की फिल्म 'धुंध' 1973 में आई थी।

साहिर साहब ने जब इस गाने को लिखा होगा, उस समय 

उनके अपने दिल की टीस, दर्द और कसक किसी गहराई तक रही होगी। दुनिया में पाठक होते हैं, दर्शक हो,  श्रोता और राहगीर भी और कुछ ऐसे होते हैं जो दर्द के बीच में जीते हुए रोज़ किसी धागे से किसी चीज़ को बुनते हैं, उधेड़ते हैं और फिर बुनने लग जाते हैं। उदास दिल का साहिर, एक उदास अमृता, एक उदास इमरोज और ऐसे ही बहुत से और उदास शायर, गीतकार, फनकार इन सब ने अपनी उदासियों के बीच में कुछ ऐसा गढ़ा कि फिर वो कभी मिट ना पाया। साहिर का ये गाना उसी की एक मिसाल है।

Tinka Jail Radio in District Jail Dehradun। Pavan Kothari with Shams Tahir Khan। आज तक: April 2026

 In an interview given to Shams Tahir Khan of Aaj Tak, Jailor of District Jail, Dehradun, Pavan Kothari shared his experiences of Tinka Tinka Foundation and the role of jail radio, conceptualised and executed by Professor Vartika Nanda. This interview was titled- क़ातिल, रेपिस्ट, गैगस्टर जब एक छत के नीचे हों तब बिना हथियार जेलर उन्हें कैसे संभालते हैं? EP 2229 and was released on 25 April, 2026.

Launch of Jail Radio Jockey Training Program in District Jail, Karnal

Summary: June, 2026: Tinka Tinka Foundation (TTF) has launched the next phase of its training programme for inmates lodged in District Jail, Karnal. This continues the foundation's ongoing work in Haryana's jails, which began in 2020 with 21 inmates firstly trained in December 2020. Haryana got its first jail radio in 2021, and the initiative has since expanded to 14 out of 20 jails in the state, training over 300 inmates, including women inmates, as radio jockeys. District Jail, Karnal was covered under Phase II of this initiative.  A press release dated 9 March 2024 stated that 74% of inmates in District Jail, Karnal said prison radio helped them deal with mental health issues, based on a survey of 10 questions. Professor (Dr.) Vartika Nanda, founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation and Head, Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, is credited with conceptualising and executing prison radios across Haryana and also in District Jail, Agra (Uttar Pradesh) and District Jail, Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

A New Chapter in Karnal Jail

A group of 20 inmates have arrived at the office of the Jail Superintendent in District Jail, Karnal, eager to begin their training as radio jockeys. This marks the next phase of the Jail Radio initiative in Haryana, where prison administration, in partnership with Tinka Tinka Foundation, is empowering inmates with skills in broadcasting, communication, and creative expression.

The training program is designed to teach technical skills and  instill confidence, discipline and a sense of responsibility among participants. For the three women inmates included in this batch, it is a rare opportunity to voice their thoughts and contribute meaningfully to prison life. These inmates will be trained by Professor (Dr.) Vartika Nanda, Head, Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation. She had conceptualised prison radio in the state of Haryana in 2020. 

History of Jail Radio in Haryana

Haryana became the first state in India to establish a structured jail radio system in 2020. Initiated in District Jail, Panipat, the initiative is spearheaded by Shri Alok Mittal (IPS), DG Prisons, Haryana in collaboration with Tinka Tinka Foundation.

Today, Tinka Jail radio has expanded across prisons in the state, creating a network of inmate-run stations that broadcast programs on health, education, culture, and rehabilitation. The initiative has been hailed as a model of prison reform, combining creativity with correctional philosophy.

Significance and Impact of Jail Radio

Jail radio is more than entertainment. It is a tool of transformation. It has empowered inmates with new skills, given them confidence, and a sense of purpose, helped in community building, fostering dialogue and connection among inmates, and supported in combating combat isolation and depression by sharing their stories. According to the Superintendent of the Jail, Shri Lakhbir Singh Brar, “Jail radio has proven its worth in improving mental health and the overall atmosphere in the jails. Each day, inmates eagerly look forward to our broadcasts.”

International Recognition

Tinka Jail Radio initiative has been showcased at international conferences on prison reform and correctional innovation. Experts from across the world have praised Haryana’s model for its unique blend of creativity and rehabilitation.

The success of jail radio has been documented in the book “Radio in Prison” published by the National Book Trust (NBT). This publication captures the stories, struggles, and successes of inmates who became radio jockeys, offering readers a glimpse into how sound waves can break barriers of silence and despair. The book stands as a testimony to the power of communication in correctional spaces, and Karnal’s new training program adds another chapter to this inspiring journey.

Looking Ahead

The re-launch of jail radio jockey training in Karnal is not just a program, it is a movement towards reform, rehabilitation, and reintegration. By giving inmates a voice, Haryana’s prison administration is reshaping the narrative of incarceration from punishment to transformation.

As these 20 inmates step into the world of broadcasting, they carry with them the promise of hope, creativity, and change. Jail radio is no longer confined in prison walls—it is a symbol of resilience and renewal.

14 जून, 2026 : प्रेस विज्ञप्ति: करनाल जेल रेडियो- 20 बंदी होंगे रेडियो जाकी

- 20 जेल बंदियों ने करनाल जिला जेल में तिनका जेल रेडियो के लिए रेडियो जॉकी बनने का प्रशिक्षण शुरू कर दिया है. इनमें तीन महिलाएं भी हैं.

- तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन ने 2020 में हरियाणा कारागार के साथ मिलकर इस पहल को  शुरू  किया था.  

-  कोविड-19 के दौरान कैदियों को आशा, जानकारी और जुड़ाव प्रदान करने में अहम भूमिका।

- नेशनल बुक ट्रस्ट (NBT) द्वारा प्रकाशित पुस्तक “रेडियो इन प्रिजन” में इस पहल का उल्लेख।

करनाल जेल में नया अध्याय

करनाल जिला जेल में 20 कैदी जेल अधीक्षक के कार्यालय पहुँचे हैं, जहाँ वे रेडियो जॉकी बनने के प्रशिक्षण की शुरुआत करेंगे। यह हरियाणा की जेल रेडियो पहल का अगला चरण है, जिसमें जेल प्रशासन और तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन मिलकर कैदियों को प्रसारण, संचार और रचनात्मक अभिव्यक्ति का कौशल सिखा रहे हैं।

इस प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम का उद्देश्य तकनीकी ज्ञान देना, आत्मविश्वास बढ़ाना, अनुशासन और जिम्मेदारी की भावना विकसित करना है। इस बैच में शामिल तीन महिला कैदियों के लिए यह एक दुर्लभ अवसर है, जिससे वे अपनी सोच को आवाज़ दे सकें और जेल जीवन में सार्थक योगदान कर सकें। प्रशिक्षण का संचालन प्रोफेसर (डॉ.) वर्तिका नंदा, प्रमुख, पत्रकारिता विभाग, लेडी श्रीराम कॉलेज, दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय एवं संस्थापक, तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन द्वारा किया जाएगा। उन्होंने 2020 में हरियाणा में जेल रेडियो की परिकल्पना की थी।

हरियाणा में जेल रेडियो का इतिहास

हरियाणा भारत का पहला राज्य बना जिसने 2020 में एक संरचित जेल रेडियो प्रणाली स्थापित की। इसकी शुरुआत जिला जेल, पानीपत से हुई थी। इस पहल को तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन  श्री आलोक मित्तल (IPS), महानिदेशक, हरियाणा कारागार नेके सहयोग से आगे बढ़ाया है।

आज तिनका जेल रेडियो राज्य की कई जेलों में फैल चुका है और कैदियों द्वारा संचालित रेडियो स्टेशन स्वास्थ्य, शिक्षा, संस्कृति और पुनर्वास पर कार्यक्रम प्रसारित कर रहे हैं। इसे जेल सुधार का एक आदर्श मॉडल माना गया है, जिसमें रचनात्मकता और सुधारात्मक दर्शन का संगम है।

जेल रेडियो का महत्व और प्रभाव

जेल रेडियो केवल मनोरंजन नहीं है, यह परिवर्तन का साधन है। इसने कैदियों को नए कौशल दिए, आत्मविश्वास और उद्देश्य की भावना दी, समुदाय निर्माण में मदद की, संवाद और जुड़ाव को बढ़ावा दिया और अकेलेपन व अवसाद से लड़ने में सहारा दिया।

जेल अधीक्षक श्री लखबीर सिंह बरार के अनुसार –

“जेल रेडियो ने मानसिक स्वास्थ्य और जेलों के वातावरण को बेहतर बनाने में अपनी उपयोगिता साबित की है। कैदी हर दिन हमारे प्रसारण का बेसब्री से इंतजार करते हैं।”

अंतरराष्ट्रीय पहचान

तिनका जेल रेडियो पहल को अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मेलनों में प्रस्तुत किया गया है, जहाँ जेल सुधार और सुधारात्मक नवाचार पर चर्चा होती है। दुनिया भर के विशेषज्ञों ने हरियाणा के मॉडल की सराहना की है।

“रेडियो इन प्रिजन” – राष्ट्रीय पुस्तक न्यास प्रकाशन

जेल रेडियो की सफलता को राष्ट्रीय पुस्तक न्यास (NBT) द्वारा प्रकाशित पुस्तक “रेडियो इन प्रिजन” में दर्ज किया गया है। इसमें उन कैदियों की कहानियाँ, संघर्ष और सफलताएँ शामिल हैं जो रेडियो जॉकी बने। यह पुस्तक दिखाती है कि कैसे रेडियो जेल की दीवारों के भीतर आशा और संवाद का पुल बना सकता है.

आगे की राह

करनाल में जेल रेडियो जॉकी प्रशिक्षण का पुनः शुभारंभ केवल एक कार्यक्रम नहीं, बल्कि सुधार, पुनर्वास और पुनः एकीकरण की दिशा में एक आंदोलन है। कैदियों को आवाज़ देकर हरियाणा का जेल प्रशासन सज़ा की परिभाषा को बदल रहा है - दंड से परिवर्तन की ओर।

ये 20 कैदी जब प्रसारण की दुनिया में कदम रखेंगे, तो वे आशा, रचनात्मकता और बदलाव का संदेश साथ लेकर चलेंगे। जेल रेडियो अब केवल जेल की दीवारों तक सीमित नहीं है – यह दृढ़ता और नवजीवन का प्रतीक है।

The Utility of Blogging for Education: How Blogs can Act as Healing Aid in Post-Pandemic Education and Beyond

As education shifted online during the trying times of the pandemic, the challenge to bridge the learning gap between students, study materials, teachers and the new modes of learning became evident. In light of this concern, Dr. Vartika Nanda, Head, Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, introduced the exemplary initiative of creating a conducive atmosphere of effective learning for students. Her vision, proclaiming a learning without barriers, progressed into helping students make the best from the online mode in the most innovative way possible.

Over the past few years, Dr. Vartika Nanda’s blog (http://vartikananda.blogspot.com/) has emerged as a platform disseminating essential knowledge related to the curriculum to the students. Its use has ensured in-depth learning, making it the most accessible hub for students offering essential course-related reading material and meticulously compiled notes. These notes come embedded with useful external links and citations that help students get to the deepest root of the subject matter. Containing reliable information from the year 2006 to 2021, this blog is indeed an information archive which can be referred by the students at any time. The blog also contains a sub-section on books related to media enabling the student-body broaden its knowledge with diverse and exhaustive texts on key industrial practices. There are several publications written by Dr. Nanda herself which cover the subject of journalism comprehensively, a feature which has helped make the blog a go-to source for the students of the department for any course-related query. 

By way of the blog, Dr. Nanda encourages students to come forward and take the initiative to contribute and enrich the overall learning base. Manifestly, several articles on this blog have been written, compiled and edited by the students on the topics related to media and journalism, among others. A variety of topics have been covered by the students so far, an activity which gives them a push to do something productive. The entire process is an immense learning experience for the students as often the whole class contributes to certain pieces which then receive encouragement as they get published on the blog. Apart from that, such recognition instils in students a sense of pride and adds weightage to their portfolio. 

Dr. Nanda’s blog has transformed into a repository of content that can enhance students’ knowledge about topics both theoretical and practical in nature. Interactivity is the key factor optimising the blog. Students positively comment on blogposts, highlighting the scope of improvement and making essential value-additions. This, additionally, broadens the margin of discussion, opening the gates for new information and facilitating the exchange of ideas. Students have also shared their journey and experiences on the blog. This blog has given them the strength to be outspoken and expressive. Several exercises have been carried out to make students express their hearts and be more thoughtfully vocal. For example, ‘The Lockdown Diaries’, an initiative that prompted students to write about their experiences during the national lockdown, gave them a space to express themselves and share their new learnings. Students also exchanged their woes and sufferings, which in turn made them feel more connected to their peers in college. 

Over several months, Dr. Nanda’s blog has grown to witness the expression of creative talent of students across domains. The blog has provided a strong push to students to incorporate technical and practical learning in their reading of theoretical material. Few examples of this are the various posts containing essential information on newsletter-making, magazine-designing, and the many exhibits of posters and videos. Such content has helped students learn to stay loyal to the decided theme, come up with creative names for their publications, finalize the content, write unique headlines, structure writings in various formats, carry out designing, work in groups and generate the best-possible output in a way most efficient.

The blog also contains sections on media glossary, columns on journalism, along with significant content written by Dr. Nanda herself. This blog treasures particulars about Dr. Nanda’s remarkable efforts and hard work in prison reforms that led to the Tinka Tinka movement that she founded years ago. Some sections enormously help one to dig deeper into Tinka Tinka’s efforts in the prisons in Tihar, Dasna and Madhya Pradesh, three impressively unique landmarks in the arena of prison reforms in India that have been recognised across the country. There is a separate space called ‘Corona Diaries’ which documents the lives of prisoners during the pandemic providing the readers a sticking insight into their lives behind bars.

Dr. Vartika Nanda also writes several columns, pieces and poems that are an immense source of inspiration for youth and for all the visitors on the blog. The blog’s ‘Media Desk’ displays a thorough inside-view of the work carried out by her in the field of media, socially as well as in her different publications. Alongside, the detailed reports of several events, often curated by the students of the department, on the blog, enable connectivity and present rich insights into the recent developments at the college and departmental level.  

Overall, Dr. Vartika Nanda’s blog has evolved into an enriching platform where students can get useful resources, express themselves and showcase their talent in a very positive way. It has helped alleviate the knowledge gap amongst students by encouraging them to work collectively, and subsequently recording and preserving their efforts, getting more engaged with the subject. The initiative serves as an excellent experiment which can be taken forward by our educators to make learning more fruitful and interactive for students and teachers alike.

2 June, 2026: आकाशवाणी के 90 वर्ष पूरे होने के मौके पर पर् आकाशवाणी भवन में एक विशेष कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया गया.  इस उपलक्ष्य पर आजआमंत्रित श्रोताओं के समक्ष एक विशेष वार्तालाप -'आकाशवाणी : भोर से पहले भोर के बाद ' की रिकार्डिंग हुई. 
आकाशवाणी के 90 वर्षों के इतिहास और विकास पर चर्चा में शामिल हुए- डॉ. प्रज्ञा पालीवाल गौड़ (कुलपति, IIMC), श्री अशोक टंडन, 8ी प्रदीप सरदाना और मैं. 
इस कार्यक्रम का संयोजन श्री अवतार बैरवा ने किया, कार्यक्रम के प्रस्तुतकर्ता थे- श्रवण मीणा और प्रस्तुति सहयोग  रहा- कीर्ति बैद का.  इस दौरान रेडियोकर्मी  निवेदिता से भी मुलाकात हुई.

हिन्दी पत्रकारिता द्विशताब्दी राष्ट्रीय महोत्सव: IGNCA: 31 May, 2026

दिल्ली में 30-31 मई को सप्रे संग्रहालय और इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय कला केन्द्र का आयोजन

31 मई: हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के 200 वर्ष पूरे होने पर 30-31 मई को दिल्ली में राष्ट्रीय द्विशताब्दी महोत्सव का आयोजन किया गया. इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय कला केन्द्र, नई दिल्ली एवं माधवराव सप्रे स्मृति समाचारपत्र संग्रहालय एवं शोध संस्थान, भोपाल के संयुक्त आयोजन में आज हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के 200 साल : पुनरावलोकन- पर एक विमर्श हुआ. मंच पर मुझे प्रो. गिरीश्वर मिश्र प्रो. कृपाशंकर चौबे, डॉ. धनंजय चौपड़ा, प्रो. हरबंश दीक्षित और प्रो. उषारानी राव के सान्निध्य में अपनी बात रखने का मौका मिला. मेरा विषय था- दृश्य श्रव्य माध्यम की हिन्दी पत्रकारिता. मैं Vijay Dutt Shridhar जी, राम बहादुर राय जी Sachchidanand Joshiजी की हार्दिक आभारी हूं आज तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन का स्थापना दिवस भी है.

30 मई: स्मारक डाक टिकट एवं प्रथम दिवस आवरण का लोकार्पण स्मारक ग्रंथ का विमोचन और दो दिवसीय विमर्श 

ऐतिहासिक पत्रों एवं कलम के पुरखों की चित्र प्रदर्शनी

भोपाल, 28 मई हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के 200 वर्ष पूरे होने पर 30-31 मई को दिल्ली में राष्ट्रीय द्विशताब्दी महोत्सव का आयोजन किया जा रहा है। इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय कला केन्द्र, नई दिल्ली एवं माधवराव सप्रे स्मृति समाचारपत्र संग्रहालय एवं शोध संस्थान, भोपाल के संयुक्त आयोजन में 'स्मारक डाक टिकट एवं प्रथम दिवस आवरण का लोकार्पण होगा। 'हिन्दी पत्रकारिताः 200 साल की महागाथा स्मारक ग्रंथ का विमोचन किया जाएगा। हिन्दी पत्रकारिता की दो शताब्दी की गौरवशाली यात्रा के अग्रगण्य समाचारपत्रों और पत्रिकाओं तथा युग निर्माता संपादकों के चित्रों की प्रदर्शनी लगाई जाएगी। यह प्रदर्शनी अचल और सचल स्वरूप में रहेगी, जो बाद में सप्रे संग्रहालय का स्थायी अंग बनेगी।

हिंदी पत्रकारिता द्विशताब्दी राष्ट्रीय महोत्सव के मुख्य अतिथि भारत के संचार मंत्री श्री ज्योतिरादित्य सिंधिया स्मारक डाक टिकट तथा प्रथम दिवस आवरण का लोकार्पण करेंगे। सूचना एवं प्रसारण मंत्री श्री अश्विनी वैष्णव स्मारक ग्रंथ का विमोचन करेंगे। स्मारक ग्रंथ का सम्पादन श्री विजयदत्त श्रीधर एवं डॉ. सच्चिदानंद जोशी ने किया है। डॉ. श्रीकांत सिंह की पुस्तक 'हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के हिन्दीतर उन्नायक' का भी विमोचन होगा। महोत्सव के अध्यक्ष मूर्धन्य संपादक श्री रामबहादुर राय हिंदी पत्रकारिता के भूत-वर्तमान-भविष्य की व्याख्या अपने बीज वक्तव्य में करेंगे। शुभारंभ राष्ट्रीय कला केन्द्र के जनपथ बिल्डिंग स्थित सभागार में 30 मई को अपरान्ह 4.00 बजे होगा।

31 मई को विमर्श के दो सत्र रखे गये हैं। पहला सत्र सुबह 10.30 बजे आरम्भ होगा। महात्मा गांधी अंतरराष्ट्रीय हिन्दी विश्वविद्यालय के पूर्व कुलपति प्रोफे. गिरीश्वर मिश्र अध्यक्षता करेंगे। प्रो. कृपाशंकर चौबे- 'हिन्दीतर मनीषियों का योगदान, डॉ. धनंजय चोपड़ा 'हिन्दी पत्रकारिता और जन आन्दोलन', प्रो. वर्तिका नंदा- 'दृश्य-श्रव्य माध्यम की पत्रकारित्ता', प्रो. हरवंश दीक्षित 'हिन्दी पत्रकारिताः संवैधानिक अधिकार और सरकार और प्रो. उषारानी राव 'दक्षिण भारत में हिन्दी पत्रकारिता' विषय का प्रतिपादन करेंगे। दूसरा सत्र दोपहर 2.00 बजे आरम्भ होगा। इस सत्र की अध्यक्षता राज्यसभा के उपसभापति एवं सुधी संपादक रहे श्री हरिवंश करेंगे। इस सत्र में सम्पादक, चिंतक और लेखक श्री रामबहादुर राय 'आपातकालः सीख और सबक', सुश्री क्षमा शर्मा 'हिन्दी पत्रकारिता में महिला सहभागिता', श्री दिलीप मंडल 'सोशल मीडिया कितना सोशल', सुश्री खुशबू जैन- 'तकनीकी नवाचार' विषय का विश्लेषण प्रस्तुत करेंगे। प्रथम सत्र में प्रो. वर्तिका नंदा की पुस्तक 'ज से जेल' तथा दूसरे सत्र में प्रो. प्रमोद कुमार की पुस्तक 'पारखी दृष्टि में समग्र भारतीय पत्रकारिता' का विमोचन होगा।

महोत्सव में दिल्ली स्थित पत्रकारिता एवं जनसंचार विषयक संस्थानों के प्राध्यापक, शोध छात्र एवं विद्यार्थी तथा हिन्दी पत्रकारिता में रुचि रखने वाले सुधी पत्रकार, साहित्यकार, शिक्षाविद एवं सामाजिक सरोकारों से प्रतिबद्ध कार्यकर्ता सहभागिता करेंगे।
