Dr. Vartika Nanda
Dr. Vartika Nanda heads the Department of Journalism, at Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. She is India’s leading prison reformer and the Founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation, a Public Charitable Trust, contributing to improving the prison atmosphere and reforming inmates.
The President of India conferred the Stree Shakti Puraskar on her in 2014 for her contribution to women's empowerment through media and literature. Her name has also been included in the Limca Book of Records twice for her unique work on prison reforms. Her work on prisons was taken cognizance by the Supreme Court of India in 2018.
Her major projects with Tihar Prison Complex (Delhi), District Jail, Dasna, District Jail, Agra (Uttar Pradesh), and the jails of Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have brought immense positive changes in prisons, fulfilling the communication needs of inmates and paved the way to reformation. She has been instrumental in conceptualizing and executing prison radio in District Jail, Agra (Uttar Pradesh), District Jail, Dehradun (Uttarakhand), and the jails of Haryana. All the 12 Tinka Jail Radio stations are operational. Her recent research on the "Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh" has been evaluated as OUTSTANDING by ICSSR.
She has authored 10 books on media, prisons, and poetry. Her 3 books on prisons are authentic versions of prison life. Her Tinka Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts are the only podcasts in India dedicated to Indian prisons. She has conceived the podcast series of Delhi Police, Kissa Khaki Ka, the only podcast run by any police department in India. Vartika Nanda is the official storyteller of Kissa Khaki Ka and is the ‘Voice of Delhi Police.’
