Teachers’ Day 2022

“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.”

– Mark Van Doren

Teachers unarguably play a crucial role in shaping individuals and their identities. Far away from home, when children find themselves submerged in a pool of strangers in school, a teacher’s love and support makes them sail through the hurdles of loneliness. A teacher is a child’s first role model, someone who knows everything and can never be wrong – perhaps this is why every child dreams of becoming a teacher in their childhood. When life gets tough, we often go out to our teachers – the ones who have always given us problems to solve on paper – seeking solutions for the problems that cannot be put on paper. The job of a teacher is beyond the boundaries of academics, it goes beyond the brick walls of classrooms and extends into the past, present and future. The love, guidance and knowledge imparted by teachers is something that students carry in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives, they indeed influence every step of our journey.

To express their gratitude to the faculty that has always been supportive and encouraging, the Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, celebrated teachers’ day on the 5th of September, 2022. The event was hosted in honour of the teaching and non-teaching staff, who have always guided and motivated the students to realize their potential and achieve their dreams. The sentiment behind the event was to thank and celebrate the teachers for the efforts they put in and pains they go through to make learning easy and accessible for all. Numerous engaging activities were planned to give the teachers a chance to bond and interact with the student body and the event was managed by Ananya Sharma and Ananya Nair from the events management team.

The celebrations started off with the students cheering for the teachers and wishing them as they entered the media lab. The teachers were welcomed with flowers and handmade cards (made by Ashmi Jain, Stuti Garg, Komal Rao and Ishita Kisku) as a token of gratitude. The compères for the day – Deepshikha and Nishita Sinha – kickstarted the event by welcoming the audience and introducing the event. The first performance for the day was a dance performance by Jahanvi Aggarwal, who spread her infectious energy around with some peppy moves and groovy music. Next in line was Kriti Kumar, who won hearts with her elegant moves and graceful expressions.

Shifting the mood to poetry and prose, the open mic provided the students a platform to express their emotions through carefully crafted words. Ashmi Jain was the first to take up the stage and narrate her experiences in college so far, emphasising on the role played by the teachers in the journey. Next up was Yashna Dhuria with an inspiring poem about the importance of teachers, followed by a special tribute to teachers – straight out of the heart. The open mic concluded with Nandini Rikhee reciting a self composed poem that was written during the event itself.

Next up were a string of musical performances by some of the very talented musicians of the department. Tanya Pratap sang the all time favourite ‘Mere Saamne Vaali Khidki Mein’ in her melodious voice, making everyone groove to her tune. Gayathri DS was next in line with one of the classics ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’. Needless to say, everybody joined in and had a great time singing together. The last performance for the day was ‘Heal the World’ by Miriam Sumana Benjamin. The soulful song in Miriam’s euphonious voice was a perfect end to an extremely delightful musical extravaganza.

With the performances wrapped up, the teachers were in for yet another surprise. A compilation of videos of students dancing was presented before the faculty which left them pleasantly surprised with the overflow of hidden talent in the department. It however, did not end there. A second video, compiled by Gayathri DS, consisting of out station students as well as alumni of the department was played for the teachers. Looking at their new and old students on the screen, the teachers were struck with glee and nostalgia.

To mark an end to the event, the floor was open for the teachers to share their thoughts and emotions. Dr Vartika Nanda was the first to express her gratitude and appreciation to the student body for the event. She was highly appreciative of the hidden talents that students possess in the department and the fact that the entire department worked collectively in making the event a success. She shared a few personal anecdotes wherein she highlighted the role that teachers play in a student’s life and how a teacher’s and a student’s life is always intertwined, no matter where they go. Ms Suruchi Shirish also appreciated the event and expressed joy over the fact that teachers and students could finally interact and celebrate with each other together – something that had not been put on halt due to the pandemic. Ms Sneha Bhati praised the students for their performances and said that the teachers were overwhelmed with the love that they had received. She encouraged the students to always strive for excellence – reiterating the fact that their teachers are always there to guide them.

With the event finally over, the department gathered in front of the staircase for a group picture.
