J Se Jail, authored by prison reformer, educator and author Prof. Vartika Nanda and published by Prabhat Prakashan, was launched on 22 July 2026 at Samvet Auditorium, IGNCA, New Delhi, in the presence of Hon’ble Justice Sandeep Mehta, Judge, Supreme Court of India; Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, President, IGNCA; and Prof. Sachidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA.
Justice Mehta read out a poignant story of a child from the book who stepped outside prison for the first time during her mother’s court hearing seeing a car for the first time and even mistaking a cat for a “ghost”. He reflected on how J Se Jail brings readers face-to-face with the pain and realities of prison life while highlighting the importance of open prisons and reformative justice.
Prof. Vartika Nanda made a powerful appeal: “After reading this book, make sure it reaches someone in a barrack.”
Despite protests in the city, the auditorium was fully packed. A Tinka Tinka exhibition, showcasing creativity and reform in prisons was also displayed on the occasion.
The launch left a powerful message: prison should not become barriers to dignity and hope and that meaningful reform begins when society chooses to look beyond those walls.
