Panipat Jail Radio celebrates its first anniversary: Theme Song Released : 16TH January, 2022

“Dede tu mauka zindagi, ik baar jeene ka”, is echoing through the walls of Jail Radio Room, Panipat. The masterpiece is composed and sung by three inmates- Kashish, Suresh and Aasheesh, all lodged in District Jail, Panipat. The song has been released in the 34th podcast on YouTube channel of Tinka Tinka Prison Reforms today. This is the 8th song released from the jails of Haryana on the YouTube platform of Tinka Tinka Foundation. 16th January marks an important day in the history of Haryana Jails. The conception of Jail Radio in the jails of Haryana was brought into the premises of District Jail, Panipat for the very first time on this day in 2021.

 Jail Radio During Covid-19 

Jail Radio has helped inmates in coping up with stress related problems and deal with mental agony during pandemic. It plays the role of a stress reliever. Since the beginning of Covid-19, inmates have been confined alone in solitude as visitors were forbidden due to the pandemic which resulted in an isolated and depressed environment. Jail Radio has helped inmates overcome the gloomy environment and sadness. Inmates have displayed tremendous desire to make changes in their personality and come out as a better version of themselves. Concept of Tinka Jail Radio Journey of Jail Radio in Haryana began with District Jail, Panipat and has spread its wings in 7 prisons till date. 

The concept of Jail Radio was brought into sight with an insight to boost up the morale of the inmates. Tinka Jail Radio was conceptualised by Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder Tinka Tinka Foundation. She trained and auditioned inmates to become RJ’s. She has also trained inmates to make newsletters and write content for magazines. Tinka Tinka Foundation has given a platform to inmates to showcase their talent. Musical Experiments through Jail Radio “Dede tu mauka zindagi, ik baar jeene ka” has been sung by Kashish, a guitarist, Suresh and Aasheesh. All three of them are RJ’s in Jail Radio Panipat. Earlier, a song sung and composed by Kashish was released on Tinka Tinka YouTube channel on the occasion of Nelson Mandela Day in the Podcast number 22. It was liked by masses of people. The number of listeners expressed the opinion that the voice of the singer has a “Kashish” as his name. 

Reaction of Administrators and Jail Staff

According to Shri Mohammad Akil, DG Prisons, Haryana, “Prison radio has yielded positive results in all the jails of Haryana wherever we have launched it. The objective is to give inmates a constructive engagement and enhance their skills, also helping the reformation process. “ According to Shri Devi Dayal , Jail Superintendent, Panipat , “Efforts are being made to develop some skills in the inmates so that on completion of their tenure they can earn their living. “ 

The Platforms Songs composed by inmates are released on the YouTube Channel of Tinka Tinka Prison Reforms and Spotify.

The video covered jail radio, inmates associated with jail radio, Jail Superintendent, Panipat and Dr. Vartika Nanda, mentor of jail radio.

About the Founder 

Dr. Vartika Nanda is a prison reformer and media educator. She has initiated a movement on prison reforms in India under the banner, Tinka Tinka. President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, conferred the Stree Shakti Puraskar on her in 2014. Her work on prisons was taken cognizance by the Supreme Court of India in 2018. Her name has also been included in the Limca Book of Records twice for her unique work on prison reforms. Her recent research on the “Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh” has been evaluated as ‘outstanding’ by ICSSR. Currently, she heads the Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.

It is truly inspiring to see the inmates getting well-deserved recognition through their self-written music. This achievement by Tinka Tinka is a testimony to the fact that creativity is the key to change.
