Public Service Advertisements: IBM/ ABM

1. Meaning

A Public Service Advertisement (PSA) is a message designed to inform, educate, or persuade the public about issues of social importance.

Unlike commercial ads, PSAs do not promote products or services for profit — their goal is public welfare.

2. Objectives

Awareness: Highlight social, health, or environmental concerns.

Behavior Change: Encourage safer, healthier, or more responsible actions.

Mobilization: Inspire collective participation in campaigns or movements.

Support Policy: Help governments and NGOs achieve social goals.

Correct Misconceptions: Dispel myths and misinformation.

3. Characteristics

Non-commercial: No profit motive.

Clarity: Simple language and visuals for mass understanding.

Linear and Non-Linear Editing

 (These notes are compiled for the benefit of the students. This blog is a public service initiative, with no commercial interests involved) 


Modern video editing software allows professionals and amateurs to arrange/ edit clips in their desired order. This method is called nonlinear editing, though one can also appreciate traditional linear editing.

What is linear editing?

Linear editing, or tape-to-tape editing, is the process of arranging images and audio recordings in chronological order. Because editing clips that you already added to the sequence is challenging, it's important to establish a predetermined order of events when using this method.

One of the most popular applications of linear editing was for movies and TV shows that used traditional film. Editors would cut film strips into different scenes and glue them together to create a logical sequence. Linear editing also applies to workflows that involve recordings on camcorders and VCRs.

For instance, consider someone using footage from a camcorder and VCR. If they want to begin the movie with footage from the camcorder, they load the tape into a source deck. They scrub to the desired scene, set an in-point and set an out-point after scrubbing to the final frame of the scene.

The source deck feeds into a record deck that records the scene and stops the recording once it reaches the outpoint. The editor can add the next scene to the record deck by loading the VCR tape into the source deck and repeating the scrubbing process.

What is nonlinear editing?

Non-linear editing is a more versatile method for creating movies. It involves the arrangement of images and sounds in any order and relies on advanced nonlinear editing computer software.

Editors can use footage from various source materials and start in the middle or at the end of segments. They can also copy and paste clips, restore deleted segments and edit a clip's color, brightness and contrast.

For instance, consider an advertiser who wants to film a promotional video for a new product. They upload two videos that feature people using the product and narration audio to their editing software. They can intercut the footage together to establish the video's pace and add a separate track so that the narration plays over the two videos.

The software makes it relatively simple to trim footage, change the order of clips and delete clips without affecting the rest of the sequence. The advertiser can also add music and text to the screen to encourage customers to buy the product.

Non-Linear Editing vs. Linear Editing

Linear editing is a traditional method where images and audio recordings are arranged in chronological order. This method was popular for movies and TV shows that used traditional film. Editors would cut film strips into different scenes and glue them together to create a logical sequence. Linear editing also applies to workflows that involve recordings on camcorders and VCRs

Editors can use footage from various sources and start editing from any point in the sequence. They can also copy and paste clips, restore deleted segments, and edit a clip's color, brightness, and contrast

Key Differences

Preservation of Quality

 Linear editing requires recording a tape from the source deck to the record deck, a process called dubbing, which results in a generational loss of quality. Even high-quality tapes and decks result in some loss of quality. Nonlinear editing, however, maintains the original files, preserving the quality regardless of the number of edits made

Flexibility

Linear editing is less flexible as it is challenging to correct mistakes. For instance, if you wanted to switch the order of clips, you would need to start a new recording. Nonlinear editing allows for easy rearrangement of clips without starting a new project

Time

Linear editing can be time-consuming due to the need for careful planning and selection of clips to prevent extensive revisions later. Nonlinear editing is more efficient as it allows for instant playback and adjustments, helping editors develop new ideas and be as efficient as possible

Modern Usage

Due to the accessibility of advanced editing software, linear editing is relatively obsolete today. Nonlinear editing is more common as it allows for more creative freedom and easier correction of mistakes. However, linear editing may still be used for educational purposes, simplicity, or achieving a specific aesthetic

Educational purposes: Some film schools teach linear editing while exposing students to the history of the film. Learning about this technique can also develop your knowledge base and improve your nonlinear editing skills.

Simplicity: Linear editing may be appropriate when you want to prevent format conflicts and quickly cut together a few video sections. For instance, you might upload clip A to your video editing software and add clip B directly after it without making any alterations.

Aesthetics: Despite the advent of modern recording technology, some filmmakers may want to use film or a camcorder. Achieving your desired aesthetic with these traditional mediums requires you to understand linear editing.

In summary, while linear editing has its roots in traditional film editing, nonlinear editing offers greater flexibility, efficiency, and quality preservation, making it the preferred method in modern video editing workflows.

Three Point Lighting in Photography

Learn the basics of three-point lighting including what it is, why it works, and how to set it up for your next photo or video project!

Three-point lighting is the basis for almost all other portrait lighting setups. With it, you can sculpt both the light and the shadows, as well as create just about any mood.


Properly done, it also makes sure that your subject is well-lit.


This lighting setup is used frequently both in video lighting and in photography. Though this article will focus primarily on how to light a subject in photography, the same principles apply when lighting for video.

Summary

A three-point lighting setup is typical in both video and photography. It uses three different light sources in varying positions to illuminate a subject or scene (the lights are known as a key light, fill light, and back light). This gives the scene depth and allows shadows to be controlled.


What is a Three Point Lighting Setup?

A three-point lighting setup uses three different light sources to illuminate a particular subject or scene.


Because there is light coming from three different positions, you can make sure your subjects are well-lit, control the shadows that come from the main light source, and give your subject depth.

Originally used in theater with a warm light on one side and a cool light on the other, both the photography and video worlds quickly adopted it, as it’s one of the simplest and most versatile lighting methods for making sure that images come out well on camera.


If you’re wondering what the three lights in this setup are, here’s a simplified explanation:


Key Light

As the name suggests, the key light is the main light. It’s the primary light source and creates the overall exposure in a scene. Beyond this, its primary purpose is to make sure that one side of the subject is well-lit, while the other side has some shadow.


The key light is often placed at a 45-degree angle to the camera and a bit above the subject. The size and intensity of the light source you use will determine much about where and how the other two lights are set up.



In a studio or other indoor setting, the key light is usually some sort of a specialized lamp like a softbox or a beauty dish with a strobe.


It can also be a camera’s flash or even a window. Outside during the day, the sun usually serves as the key light. You can experiment with different lighting modifiers to provide more drama to how the key light looks.


In this lighting scheme, one light goes off to the side of the subject as the key point of light.

The key light is your main illumination source. Outdoors it’s usually the sun. In the studio, it’s often a softbox or a beauty dish. Set it up at 45 degrees from your camera and slightly above your subject. In this example the key light is a beauty dish.


Fill Light

Since the key light is usually to one side of the subject, the other side will usually be filled with shadows. This is a good thing, because shadows give both depth and mood, but you still want to be able to control how strong they are and where they fall. That’s where the fill light comes in.


The fill light mellows out any harsh shadows by adding in a bit more illumination where there otherwise would be none.


Without it, the subject’s contours will come out starker. This can be fine if you’re going for a low-key effect, but for natural-looking photos, you’ll need a fill.

You can use a dedicated lamp for the fill light, a reflector, or even a white board.

It’s usually placed on the opposite side of the subject from the key light. In portrait photography, it’s usually placed at the level of the subject’s face.

It’s also softer and considerably less bright than the key light (up to half the intensity).

How you use your fill light is often where the overall feel of a shot comes in. A dim, diffuse fill light will keep much of the shadows in place, creating a high-contrast effect. Bump it up and your subject will have a brighter, more natural look.

Use a reflector instead of a lamp and you get a different effect, especially if the reflector is colored.

Aside from the key light fill light is needed to balance the shadows on the opposing side of the subject.

The fill light is generally smaller and set at a lower intensity than the key light. It’s placed on the opposite side of the subject from the key light. Here the diagram shows a softbox with a grid to better control the edges of the fill. It’s at half-intensity.

Back Light

The back light – also known as the hair light or rim light – is the final element of the three-point lighting setup. It’s placed behind the subject (out of the camera frame) and creates a highlight either just on the hair or around the upper part of the subject, also known as a rim of light or a halo effect.

This separates the subject from the background, giving them depth and definition around their outline.

Unlike the key and fill light, the back light isn’t intended to provide direct lighting. Instead, it’s used to create a thin outline or highlight around the subject. As a result, it rarely needs to hit the front of the subject.


Depending on your scene, you can place the back light directly behind the subject (so that the camera can’t see it) or off to one side, well out of the frame. The first option is often used when lighting videos.

You can use the three-light technique for lighting video or photos.

The back light is the last of the three lights. It helps to separate the subject from the background and is set up somewhere behind the subject, either off to the side or directly behind.

Why is three-point lighting important?

Three-point lighting is the basis for almost all other single-subject lighting scenarios, both in photography and when lighting for a video. You can build on it or take lights away, but understanding the key principles behind three-point lighting will help you light just about any portrait successfully.

What is the purpose of three point lighting as it relates to actors in a scene?

Because video recorders can’t see into shadows the same way our eyes do, it’s important to provide some light to the shadows to keep them from coming across as dark and featureless. The back light is needed to help give depth to images that would otherwise come across as two-dimensional.


Regarding the actors themselves, the three-point lighting setup adds dimension to the actors. The cinematographer can also use it to shape an actor, bringing out the best or worst of them.

Do you have to have three lights no matter what, for three-point lighting?


No, there are a number of substitutions you can make for both the key and fill lights. For the key light, the sun (outside) or a window (inside) are often used. For the fill light, you can use a reflector, bounce card or something white to reflect the key light back at the subject. This can be white card stock, poster board, or even a white wall.


Which is usually the brightest light on a subject in a three point lighting system?


The key light is almost always the brightest light in a scene. The rest of your lighting will be based off of that.



Which side should the key light be on?


The key light should be placed on the side where the main light in your scene would naturally be coming from. For example, if your key light is standing in for the sun, place it on the side where the sun would be in your scene. It’s also important to place it at an appropriate angle and height to approximate the light from the sun.


Also, the key light and the fill light need to sit on opposite sides from one another.


Conclusion 

Three-point lighting is extremely versatile. By varying the type of lighting instruments you use, experimenting with how close or far they are from the subject, and varying their intensity, you can create a number of different looks.


You can also change how hard or soft the light is by using different light modifiers (i.e. grids, diffusers, etc.).


Once you master lighting techniques with three lights, you can then broaden out to a four-point lighting system (adding a background light, for example) or reducing down to just one light, depending on the intended look.


Either way, understanding the principles behind three-point lighting will unlock the door to effective portrait and video lighting.

There are many types of microphones to choose from these days – audio companies make them for live music, gaming, podcasting, and more. To pick the right mic for the right task, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of them.

The three main types of microphones are dynamic microphones, condenser microphones, and ribbon microphones. While they all have the same core construction, each of them has a different method for converting sound into electrical signals, and various uses. Aside from the big three, there are a few other microphones to be aware of as well. So, here's a brief list breaking down six of the most popular microphone types, starting with the big three:


Dynamic Microphones

Moving-coil dynamic microphones use an electromagnetic induction principle to convert sound into an electrical signal. They’re durable, versatile, and well-suited to be handheld vocal mics for live sound applications. Dynamic mics aren’t likely to overload or distort when capturing high sound pressure levels (SPL) sources such as guitar amps, drums, and horns. They also have a low sensitivity, requiring louder sources to operate. They’re best used for live performances and loud environments. A bonus is that they have no need for external power.

Condenser Microphones

Condenser microphones, sometimes called “capacitor mics,” particularly in the UK, use electrostatic technology. These mics pull their charge, called “phantom power,” from a mixer or audio interface. Phantom power (usually 48V) is supplied through an XLR cable to maintain its charge. They offer a warm, full sound with good sensitivity and low self-noise.


Condenser mics have the best high-frequency audio reproduction, making them the most common choice for capturing the nuances of voices. Hand percussion and acoustic guitar also benefit from its power. Condenser mics come in two major categories: large-diaphragm and small-diaphragm. Typically, large-diaphragm ones are ideal for studio recording with a warm, rich sound and have multiple polar patterns, while small-diaphragm condenser mics are known for accuracy and detail, often used for instrument recording and live sound.

Ribbon Microphones

Ribbon mics use a thin metal ribbon suspended between magnet poles. These microphones are technically a form of dynamic microphone. However, they’re generally treated as a separate design since they work and sound different than their traditional counterparts. A good ribbon mic offers the most natural sound reproduction as its frequency range most closely mimics human hearing. So, they’re wonderful for vocals and instruments.  


Ribbon mics are mostly used inside recording studios as they tend to be more delicate than other types of mics. Some ribbon mics are passive and don’t require external “phantom power,” while active ribbon mics do require it. It’s also important to note that passive ribbon mics can be damaged by phantom power.

USB Microphones

Created with a built-in analog-to-digital converter, these microphones connect directly to computers via USB. Due to this capability, they’re popular for podcasting, home recording, and streaming. If you don’t own an audio interface, you might consider a USB condenser mic for your podcast recording. A bonus is that you can plug the mic straight into a compatible port on your computer without any extra hardware. And luckily, USB microphones generally don’t require an external charge or phantom power in the same way that traditional XLR condenser microphones tend to do, so no external power source is needed.

Lavalier Microphones

Lavalier mics go by many titles – lapels, body mics, collar mics, or personal mics, just to name a few. They work by converting acoustic energy into electrical energy. These small clip-on mics are typically used in interviews, presentations, or live performances because they’re unobtrusive and discreet. They are usually omnidirectional, but when positioned close to the subject’s mouth, they produce clear sounds without background noise. Wireless lavalier mics normally consist of a transmitter, usually attached to the performer's clothes, and a receiver, which is connected to the audio output. They often do require some form of external power to operate.

Shotgun Microphones

Created to capture sound from a specific direction with a narrow pickup pattern, you can often see these mics mounted to high-end video cameras. A shotgun mic only picks up sounds directly in front of it and from a distance. Due to their directional pickup pattern and long reach, they’re regularly used in film production, outdoor recording, or broadcast. Shotgun microphones often do require external power, depending on their design.

In Closing

Microphones come in various types, each suited to different applications, whether it's live sound, studio recording, broadcasting, or something more specialized. The three primary types of microphones are dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones, but there are many others. To pick the proper microphone for the job, it’s important to familiarize yourself with each mic’s characteristics and best uses. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses.


Generally, dynamic mics are best used for live performances or loud environments. Condenser mics are best used for studio recording, vocals, and acoustic instruments. Ribbon mics are also good for studio recording, as well as for capturing high-frequency detail.


Aside from the big three, we’ve discussed a few other microphones – USB, lavalier, and shotgun mics. USB mics are typically utilized for podcasts, home studios, or streaming. Lavaliers are small clip-on mics often utilized in interviews, presentations, or live performances. And finally, shotgun mics are normally used for film production, outdoor recording, or broadcast.

Introduction

An expression of social relatedness and self-consciousness, music has evolved primarily as a means of social cohesion and communication, intricately woven into the fabric of human interaction, deeply influencing psychological functions and cognitive behavior. As the fulcrum of social well-being, music has been embedded deeply in everyday life to an extent where it has become the equivalent of a unifying adhesive. As a medium of communication facilitation, it has acquired a universal language manifested in the synchronization of rhythm and lyrics. Time and again, the healing power of music has been banked upon to offer a critique of the socially paralyzing aspects of religion, culture, and politics.

Characteristics of Music as a Social Commentary

As a ground of artistry and self-expression, scientifically, music induces motor outputs facilitating instant response, connecting with human emotions while building a homogenous form of mutual trust and social cohesion.

As a tool of social communication,it is believed to miraculously diffuse tensions expediting conflict resolution while fostering dialogue and cooperation.

The association of music with participatory activities is considered to create a singular temporal environment sustaining attentiveness and elevating experiential depth involuntarily.

Song lyrics help understand and modify cultural consciousness while venting out ideas of anger, hope, frustration, and pain. The Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Exeter both performed a study that affirmed how music unites us. Their studies found that different songs from all over the world have similar aspects that promote both coordination and bonding among social groups. Over 304 studied recordings were performed on diverse complex music from all parts of the world. The results established that consistent features related to rhythm and pitch resulted in statistical characteristics about inter-relationships and social context.

Historical Perspective-

Throughout history, music has emerged as a venting funnel demonstrating social attitudes and conventions. It has long been harnessed by global movements seeking social change.A particular example of this is the social movement wave of the 1950s and 1960s where black and white musicians successfully addressed racism.

Sociological Perspective-

Music and society have always been intimately related. Music reflects and creates social conditions – including the factors that either facilitate or impede social change. Music can validate your current emotional state and influence your emotional destination. Again, the Iso principle can help us experience desired emotions, creating a collective social impact. Sociologically speaking, the collective production of music, its micro-foundations of interaction, and macro-level dynamics of inequality demonstrate its social relevance by closely ending the gap between individuals and society.

Music cannon, taste, and social exclusion are closely interrelated as all are connected to the dynamics of society.

For example -

The ever-expanding status quo is defined by high modernity and advanced capitalism. Participatory music-making and dance are among a variety of activities that can be potent resources for social change and provide alternative models for citizenship because they operate according to values and practices diametrically opposed to capitalist ethics, are voluntarily open to anyone interested, and become the basis of special social cohorts—social groups drawn together by enthusiasm for the activity and shared preexisting tendencies toward the broader values that underlie the activity. Constraints on musical expression in the form of music censorship can impact artistic expression and social responsibility. Concerned with structures, practices, and motivations for music making, the cathartic aspect of social responsibility makes music a cathartic collective participatory activity.

Transformative Influence of Music on Society

In the intricate tapestry of human existence, music stands as a powerful agent of change, intertwining rhythm, and meaning to convey profound insights into society. Its unique ability to transcend linguistic barriers makes it a universal language, capable of resonating with individuals from all walks of life, irrespective of race, caste, class, gender, or disability. Studies conducted by esteemed institutions such as the Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Exeter confirm music's ability to unite dialysis of recordings from around the globe revealing shared elements of rhythm and pitch that foster coordination and social bonds.

The evolution of recording techniques and technological advancements has revolutionized access to music, democratizing its consumption and distribution. However, challenges such as music censorship can impede artistic expression and hinder social responsibility, underscoring the delicate balance between creativity and societal norms.

Released on 25 January 2024 by the Tinka Tinka Organisation under the aegis of Dr.Vartika Nanda, this episode unleashes the coming true dreams of inmates lodged behind bars.The podcast traces the story of Jai Bhagwan, an inmate incarcerated in District Jail, and Jind, a singer before being imprisoned. Tinka Tinka created another rainbow out of his long-held dream of releasing his own song written by him. A unique musical experiment, Jai Bhagwan’s song gham e zindagi mein Muskurana Chod de Delving into ideas of hope, positivity, and creativity is a soulful rendition. Following this, there was a unique collaborative effort between two distant jails of Jind and Dehradun, wherein exhorted by training material provided for Tinka jail radio, an innovative song was released.

A unique musical collaboration between two jails and a free exchange of creativity as a musical confluence was discovered when the theme song for Tinka Tinka Dasna composed by Dr.Vartika Nanda to give creative power and open the senses of inmates 8 years ago was reworked in 2016. Sung by 13 inmates of District Jail, Dasna, the composition is a mosaic of experiences and stories sung in front of the main wall of the jail, later adopted as the theme song. Recreated by Mahendra Prajapati, an inmate lodged in Sabarmati jail, Gujarat,the song is aimed at the infusion of creativity and music, a driving force,a space of change,a guiding light.

Shyam Bai was a woman who spent 20 years lodged in the prison walls. A former folk singer with two released albums to her name, she was a passionate soul when it came to musical artistry.n 2017, she was able to reconnect with music through inspiration in the form of a poem from Thee…Hoon…Rahungi…, a collection of poems composed by Dr Vartika Nanda, the founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation and India's leading prison reformer. The words from the book have been painted across prison walls all over the country and the essence of the poem resonates with women in prisons.

Fructified with the assistance of three officers, Inspector General of Uttarakhand Prisons Vimla Gunjyal, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and Senior Superintendent of Dehradun Jail, Dadhiram and Jailor Pawan Kothari, Main Hoon Tinka is a is the exposition of the talent of three inmates-Rohit Verma, Suchit Narang, and Arun. Tinka Tinka Foundation provided them  a safe space of creative expression where they have got the opportunity to release their signature tune.”Dr. Narang is a convict, lodged in District Jail, Dehradun in Uttarakhand.    We celebrate music every day. ” Dr. Vartika Nanda

Impact: Tinka Tinka Organisation,a credible charitable public trust not only recognizes talent but also gives prisoners their long-lost vocals, thereby rebuilding their confidence. The songs espouse the creation of awareness surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and other socially relevant themes.They also played a crucial role during lockdown highlighting the threatening nature of the pandemic and the importance of wearing masks.


Tinka Tinka Foundation and reformational musical efforts

The word “Tinka” taken from the Hindi language literally meaning straw, represents the essence of the Tinka Tinka Foundation, indicating moving bit by bit, step by step, to initiate positive changes in the lives of prisoners. It acts as a walking stick for destitute conditions of prisoners who face by multiple challenges.

Conclusion

Music emerges as a transcendent force that shapes and reflects societal norms, values, and aspirations. Its ability to bridge divides, inspire change, and foster empathy underscores its enduring significance in the fabric of human civilization. It is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind can’t comprehend. Music is therapy. It moves people. It connects people in ways no other medium can. It pulls heartstrings. It acts as medicine.

Envisioned as a movement that would act as a bridge between prisons, the judiciary, and society, the Tinka Tinka Foundation has been taking significant steps to accelerate the process of integrating inmates into society by contemplating ways of treating them as human resources, so that, they too, can be involved as equal stakeholders in the process of nation building. Since music acts as a therapy to bind together, over a dozen songs have been released from the prison radios since 2019. These efforts, in a nutshell, are building blocks indicating a larger change steering the society in a positive direction.

 Soundscapes are the combination of sounds that create a sense of place, mood, and atmosphere in audio stories. They can help listeners immerse themselves in the story world, feel the emotions of the characters, and understand the context and themes. 

Why sound-scapes matter ? 

Soundscapes are not just background noise or filler. They are an essential element of audio storytelling, as they can evoke feelings, memories, associations, and expectations in the listeners. Soundscapes can also set the tone, pace, and genre of the story, and enhance the narrative and Jo dialogue. For example, a soundscape of a busy city can convey a sense of urgency, chaos, or excitement, while a soundscape of a quiet forest can convey a sense of calm, solitude, or mystery.

Soundscapes are becoming an increasingly valuable tool in journalism , offering a unique and immensive way to engage audience and tell stories. Here’s how they are used:

1 )Building atmosphere and context: Soundscapes can transport readers or listeners directly into the heart of a story. By incorporating ambient sounds, interviews, and natural sounds, journalists can create a sense of place and atmosphere that written words alone might struggle to achieve. For example, a news report about a protest might include the sounds of chanting crowds, police sirens, and speeches, allowing the audience to feel the energy and tension of the event.

2 ) Evoking emotions: Sounds have a powerful ability to evoke emotions, and journalists can leverage this to enhance the impact of their stories. The gentle chirping of birds in a forest can create a sense of peace, while the cacophony of a busy city street might convey feelings of stress or urgency. By carefully selecting and weaving together different sounds, journalists can create a specific emotional response in their audience

3 ) Adding depth and dimension: Soundscapes can add a layer of depth and dimension to stories, providing a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the situation. For instance, a report on a factory closure might not only include interviews with workers but also incorporate the sounds of machinery shutting down, conveying the real-world impact of the event.

4 ) Accessibility and inclusivity: Soundscapes can also improve the accessibility and inclusivity of journalism. For people with visual impairments, audio descriptions combined with soundscapes can create a richer and more meaningful experience. Additionally, soundscapes can cater to different learning styles, appealing to those who learn best through auditory means.

Types of sound: 

1) Synchronous sound -  synchronous sound is a sound that is matched to certain movements occurring in the scene, such as when footsteps correspond to feet walking. Synchronous sound can be recorded simultaneously to  capturing  the  visual  footage  because  these  two  elements  need  to  be  in  sync.  If  it  is  recorded separately then the synchronisation between the picture and sound has to be precise in order for them to occur at the same time. For example, an actors lips has to be moving at the same speed as the sound he produces to make the footage realistic and easy to watch and interpret.

2 ) Asynchronous sound – Asynchronous  sound  also  matches  the  action  being  performed,  however  it  is  not  precisely  synchronised within the action. This type of sound is often used when the director wants to create tension as the viewer can hear a sound but cannot see the sound.

3 ) Natural sound – natural sound refers to the sounds that occur in nature, such as the sound of wind, birds, animals, water, and weather. Natural sound can also refer to sounds that are not produced by humans, such as the sound of an engine or machinery. Natural sound can be calming and relaxing, and is often used in meditation and relaxation exercises. Some people also enjoy recording and listening to natural sound as a hobby.

4 ) Ambience sound – Ambience sound refers to the background sounds that create a certain atmosphere or mood in space. This can include sounds like bird chirping, water flowing or people taking on streets. It is often used in films, television and games to create a realistic and impressive environment . It can also be used in cafés or restaurants to create a pleasant atmosphere for customers . Ambience sound can be recorded or synthesized using sound design software  Conclusion -Overall, soundscapes offer a powerful tool for journalists to enhance 

their storytelling, allowing them to connect with audiences on a deeper level and create a more immersive and impactful experience.



                                                                   Sound culture 

What is sound culture ? 

Sound culture is the auditory environment (or soundscape) located within its wider social and cultural context. The concept of a sound culture (also called an auditory or aural culture) is directly connected to the soundscape. Indeed, the distinction between the two is not that clear cut. In a sense, the sound culture is the bigger picture.

Social and cultural organisation are largely responsible for the sound landscape that we inhabit and these inevitably  change  over  time.  In  the  pre-industrial  European  world  one  of  the  defining  features  of  the soundscape was the tolling of the church bell. It told the workers in the field of the progress of their day’s toil but was also an auditory marker of the community briefly enveloped in the sound of the bell. It also reminded those who heard it of the centrality of the church in their lives.  The bell’s ring was part of the soundscape but the social and religious dimensions, which add meaning to the sound, are also part of the wider sound culture. Industrialisation created a very different soundscape, the soundscape of modernity. The cities became unprecedentedly loud; ‘the din of modern technology: the roar of elevated trains, the rumble of internal combustion engines, the crackle and hiss of radio transmissions’ Faced with this often alienating din the science of acoustics was born as 20th-century city dwellers strove to create a quieter world and even to eliminate unwanted sound. Part of the  aural mix in the USA was the sound of jazz, which came to represent the American city itself (as it does to this day in the sound tracks of Hollywood). Jazz was closely related to urban noise and the noise of the ghetto described here as it came up a Harlem ventilation shaft by the jazz musician Duke Ellington: ‘You get the full essence of Harlem in an air shaft. You hear fights, you smell dinner, you hear people making love. You hear intimate gossip floating down. You hear the radio. An air shaft is one great big loudspeaker. In India, sound culture holds immense significance and is deeply rooted in the country's rich cultural heritage. 

Structure of sound culture in India – 

1 ) Music - Music plays a central role in Indian sound culture. It is classified into two major traditions: Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian). These traditions have their unique styles, ragas (melodic frameworks), and talas (rhythmic patterns). Indian classical music is known for its intricate improvisation and emotional depth.

2 ) Language – India is a linguistically diverse country with numerous languages and dialects. Each language has its distinct phonetics, intonation patterns, and musicality. For example, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and Punjabi have their own unique sound and structures and pronunciation.

3 ) Rituals and Festivals - Sound plays a vital role in Indian rituals and festivals. For instance, the chanting of mantras, recitation of prayers, and playing of musical instruments are integral parts of religious ceremonies. Festivals like Diwali, Holi, and Navratri involve the use of firecrackers, drums, and traditional musical instruments to create a festive atmosphere

4 ) Film Industry – Indian Cinema, particularly Bollywood, has a significant impact on sound culture. Film songs and background music are integral to storytelling and evoke emotions. The use of diverse musical genres, instruments, and vocal styles adds depth and richness to Indian movies.

Functions of sound culture in India – 

1 ) Expression and Communication – Sound culture in Indiaserves as a means of expression and communication. Music, language, and various forms of vocal and instrumental performances enable individuals to convey emotions, ideas, and cultural narratives.

2 ) Identity and cultural preservation – Sound culture plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Indian cultural identity. Traditional music, folk songs, and regional languages help preserve cultural heritage and foster a sense of belonging among communities

3 ) Entertainment and Recreation – Sound culture provides entertainment and serves as a source of recreation. Indian music concerts, dance performances, and film songs are popular forms of entertainment that bring people together and create a sense of joy and celebration.

4 ) Spirituality and Meditation – Sound is deeply intertwined with spirituality in India. Chanting of mantras, devotional songs, and the use of musical instruments like the sitar and tabla are integral to spiritual practices and meditation. These sounds are believed to have a calming and transformative effect on the mind and soul.

Indian examples – 

1 ) Carnatic Music - The intricate melodic and rhythmic patterns of Carnatic music, exemplified by renowned musicians like M.S. Subbulakshmi and Balamuralikrishna, showcase the depth and complexity of Indian classical music.

2 ) Bollywood Music - The vibrant and diverse soundtracks of Bollywood films, composed by legends like A.R. Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar, reflect the fusion of traditional Indian music with contemporary styles, catering to a wide audience.

3 ) Qawwali – Qawwali  a form of devotional music popularised by artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, combines Sufi poetry with soul-stirring melodies and rhythmic patterns, creating a spiritual and ecstatic experience.

4 ) Folk Music - India's diverse regions have their unique folk music traditions, such as Baul music from Bengal, Rajasthani folk songs, and Bihu music from Assam. These forms of music reflect the cultural diversity and local narratives of different communities.


Conclusion - sound culture in India encompasses various elements such as music, language, rituals, and film. It serves multiple functions, including expression, cultural preservation, entertainment, and spirituality. Indian examples like Carnatic music, Bollywood music, Qawwali, and folk music exemplify the richness and diversity of sound culture in the country 


 Sync Sound - Synchronous sound, or sync sound, is audio that lines up precisely with what’s happening on screen. Character dialog, a shot of a river with rushing water sounds, and punching sounds during a fight scene are all examples of synchronous sound. It's the most common type of sound used in journalism because it creates a sense of realism and immediacy for viewers. There are two main types of sync sound used in journalism:

1 ) Dialogue –  This is the sound of people talking, which is essential for capturing interviews, press conferences, and other events where speech is important.

2 ) Natural Sound – This is the sound of the environment, such as traffic noise, birds chirping, or music playing in the background. Natural sound can help to set the scene and create a more immersive experience for viewers.


Sync sound is typically recorded using a microphone that is attached to the camera. This can be a shotgun microphone, which is a long, narrow microphone that is good at picking up sound from a distance, or a lavalier microphone, which is a small microphone that is clipped to the clothing of the person speaking.


Non sync sound -  Non-sync sound, also known as asynchronous sound, is any sound that is not directly synchronized with the visuals on screen. This means that the sound does not necessarily correspond to what you see happening at the exact moment.


Non-sync sound is a powerful tool that can be used to create a variety of effects in film, television, and other media. It can be used to:

1 ) Add emotion or suspense to a scene – for example - the sound of a creaking door might be used to create a sense of suspense in a horror film.

2 ) Provide foreshadowing of events to come – for example - the sound of distant thunder might be used to foreshadow a coming storm.

3 ) Establish the setting of a scene – for example- the sound of traffic might be used to establish that a scene is taking place in a city.

4 ) Create a sense of realism – The sounds of nature, such as chirping birds or rustling leaves, can add depth to a scene, even if they are not directly related to the action on screen

There are two main types of non-sync sound: 1 ) Sound effects - are sounds that are added to a film or video in post-production. They can be real or artificial sounds. Sound effects can be used to create all sorts of sounds, from the roar of a lion to the beep of a computer.

2 ) Music - is another type of non-sync sound. Music can be used to set the mood of a scene, create suspense, or add emotional depth.

Non-sync sound is an essential part of filmmaking and storytelling. It can be used to create a more immersive and engaging experience for the audience.


Natural sound - Natural sounds are all the sounds that occur in nature, excluding those made by humans. This can include a wide variety of sounds, from the calls of animals to the rushing of water or the rustling of leaves in the wind.

Here are the two main types of natural sounds:

Geophony: These are sounds produced by non-living elements of the environment. This can include things like rain, wind, thunder, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Biophony: These are sounds produced by living organisms, such as animals, insects, and birds.


Ambience sound - Ambience sound, also called background noise, atmospheric sound, or simply atoms, refers to the background sounds that exist in a particular location or environment. It's the auditory counterpart to setting the scene visually.


Classifications


1 ) Matching Ambient Sound: Sounds recorded specifically to match the background sound of a scene being filmed.

2 ) Wild Sound: Background noise with distinct sounds that are not synchronised with the main visuals, like children playing in a park.

3 ) Buzz Track: A general term for ambient sound.

4 ) Room Tone: The sound of an empty room, or a room where people are standing silently.


                                                                Microphones 

A microphone, colloquially called a mic is a transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, hearing aids, public address systems for concert halls and public events, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, sound recording, two-way radios, megaphones, and radio and television broadcasting. They are also used in computers and other electronic devices, such as mobile phones, for recording sounds, speech recognition, VoIP, and other purposes, such as ultrasonic sensors or knock sensors.

1 ) Dynamic – A dynamic microphone is a type of microphone that converts sound into an electrical signal using the principles of electromagnetism. They are the most common type of microphone and are widely used in a variety of applications, including live sound reinforcement, broadcasting, and recording. Dynamic microphones are known for their rugged construction and their ability to handle high sound pressure levels. This makes them a good choice for use in loud environments, such as live music performances. They are also relatively inexpensive compared to other types of microphones.

Here are some of the common types of dynamic microphones: A ) Moving coil microphones- These are the most common type of dynamic microphone. They are known for their durability and their ability to handle high sound pressure levels.

B ) Ribbon Microphones - These microphones use a thin ribbon of metal foil suspended within a magnetic field. They are known for their high fidelity sound reproduction, but they are also more delicate and expensive than moving coil microphones

2 ) .Condenser microphone - Condenser microphones, also known as capacitor microphones, are a type of microphone that uses a capacitor to convert sound waves into electrical signals. They are known for their high fidelity and wide frequency response, making them popular choices for studio recording, live performances, and podcasting. Condenser microphones are generally more sensitive than dynamic microphones, but they also require phantom power to operate.

3 ) Directional microphones - A directional microphone is a microphone that picks up sounds primarily from a specific direction.  An omnidirectional microphone is not considered to be directional.  The more focused a microphone is on one particular direction, the more directional it is

Why use a directional microphone? 

To reduce and/or remove unwanted noise and focus on the desired sound source.

• to create a sense of space and depth in your recordings - For example, if you are recording an interview in a noisy environment, use a highly directional microphone that can reject sounds coming from behind or beside the speaker. This way, you can capture their voice more clearly and avoid picking up distracting background noises

• to create a sense of space and depth in your recordings - For example, suppose you are recording a musical performance with multiple instruments. In that case, you can use different types of directional microphones to capture different aspects of the sound. You could use an omnidirectional microphone to record the overall ambiance of the room, a bidirectional microphone to record the stereo image of the main instrument, and a cardioid microphone to record the vocals or solo parts. By mixing these different tracks together, you can create a more realistic and immersive sound experience. 

Advantages and Disadvantages of directional microphone

 – >  Advantages - noise reduction, sound isolation, and spatial enhancement.

it can help to reduce feedback. Feedback is the annoying squealing sound that occurs when a microphone picks up its own output from a speaker or monitor.  Since a directional microphone is more sensitive to sounds coming from a specific direction, it can be located closer to a speaker or monitor without feedback as long as it is pointed AWAY from the speaker.

Disadvantages - > A directional microphone can produce a less natural sound than an omnidirectional microphone

Since a directional microphone rejects sounds coming from certain directions, it can also lose some of the natural ambiance and reverberation of the recording environment. This can make the sound more dry and dull, especially if you are recording in a large or acoustically rich space.


                                                                  Sound Design 

Definition - Sound design is part of the post-production process where the audio elements of a piece of media, like the dialogue, music, and sound effects, are manipulated to enhance a scene’s potency. Used in film, TV, theater, video games, podcasting, radio, and even software development, sound design includes everything from recording to sampling, editing, scoring, and sound mixing. Sound designers do most of their work in post-production, or the editing phase, where they help the project’s director advance their vision.

Sound design emerged with the advent of audio recording technology for film and TV. The term “sound designer” was first used in 1979, when Francis Ford Coppola credited Walter Murch under that title for his work on “Apocalypse Now.” Versus the usual credit at the time, sound editor or supervising sound editor, Coppola felt the new title encompassed Murch’s role in overseeing the film’s broader sound concept and adding to its overall creative intent. Today, most large film projects have dedicated sound designers.

Why sound design is important - Filmgoers might see audio as something that mostly serves the images on the screen. But for filmmakers, sound is actually the backbone of a film. Here’s why sound design matters: 1) Poor audio is a dealbreaker. Sound is arguably more important than image. Research has shown that videos with poor visuals (i.e., shaky, out of focus, or under-exposed) but clear audio are usually perceived as more watchable than videos with strong images but poor audio. The sound helps carry the narrative; you’ll usually have an easier time following a story with only audio than you would following a story that’s purely visual.

2 ) Sound maintains the illusion. Done right, sound design for film gives an otherwise flat, two-dimensional picture layers of authenticity. Filmmaking is the art of illusion. When making a video, your job is to feed your viewers’ senses, make them believe what you’re telling them, and make them think that what they’re watching is real. Sound, and the manipulation of sound, are crucial to this end.

3 ) We hear emotions. Good sound design makes us feel like we’re with the characters on screen. Sound can accentuate their feelings. Horror movies are an obvious example. Think of how suspenseful music and menacing sound effects shape your experience as you watch a character hide in a closet 

4 ) Audio is spatial - The visuals are confined to the four corners of the screen. But sound design can create a sense of off-screen space. There might be more happening beyond the edges of the film, and audio gives your audience a greater sense of what’s going on in the larger world, making the environment you’ve built more fully realized. Adding echoes to voices in a scene in a canyon, for example, can inform your viewers of its expanse, even when the camera angle doesn’t.


The essential elements of sound design – sound design is multifaced There are several ways you can design or manipulate audio in your video or film to immerse your audience. Here are the five main elements of sound design, which are often used in combination. 

1) Ambiance - Sometimes referred to as atmosphere, ambiance is the background noise that sets the scene and the foundation of your soundtrack. It helps immerse the audience by telling them where the action takes place.. Ambient sounds should inform and describe without overwhelming and distracting viewers from the focus. An easy way to start is to record a “silent take” (i.e. where no one is talking and nothing is happening) for room tone under the same conditions as the other takes. You can use room tone later to fill in gaps and accentuate certain aspects of the environment

2) Foley sounds - Foley is the art of creating and recording everyday sounds that synchronize with on-screen actions. It involves adding sounds such as footsteps, clothing rustle, or object interactions to enhance the realism and physicality of a scene. Foley artists use various props and surfaces to reproduce these sounds in sync with the visuals. Discover the techniques and tools used in Foley recording, as well as the importance of timing and accuracy to ensure seamless integration with the visuals.

3) Sound effects - Sound effects are artificial or recorded sounds that enhance the realism and atmosphere of a scene. They can be both natural, such as footsteps, door slams, or birds chirping, and abstract, like futuristic spaceship sounds or magical spells. Sound effects are essential for creating a sense of place, heightening suspense, and emphasizing key actions or events. Explore libraries of sound effects or consider recording your own to match the specific needs of your project.

4) Dialogue - Dialogue is the spoken communication between characters or individuals in a scene. It plays a vital role in storytelling, conveying information, emotions, and character development. In sound design, dialogue should be clear, intelligible, and appropriately balanced with other audio elements. Learn techniques for capturing and editing dialogue, including noise reduction, equalization, and dialogue replacement (ADR) if necessary.

5) Music - Music sets the mood, evokes emotions, and enhances the narrative of a scene. It can range from subtle background melodies to powerful orchestral compositions or catchy tunes. Selecting the right music for a particular moment is crucial to create the desired impact. Understand the importance of tempo, dynamics, and genre in music selection and how it should complement the visuals and overall tone of the project.


The sound design process has three key steps

   1 ) Live Recording And Design – During this initial step sound designers may record sounds, use sounds from a sound library, or create original sounds.

2 ) Mixing, Editing, And Implementation - Next, sound designers edit and synchronize their sounds with videos. They cut and mix sounds to make them more effective, then use sound engines to implement them.

3 ) Sound Effects Mix - Sound designers often add sound effects to main sound mixes.


Sound Design In Music-

Sound designers also help musical artists realize their creative visions by manipulating the raw sounds of vocals and instruments to make them sound their best. This process involves:

The Differences Between Sound Design And Music Production - Sound design and music production can be part of the same project but they are different creative processes. Sound design builds sounds and effects from scratch, while music production creates songs and soundtracks 


The Sound Designer’s Work During The Production Process - The sound designers are a vital part of any film or television production. Their work begins in pre-production and runs to the end of post-production.


1 ) Pre-Production - During pre-production, the sound design manager studies a script with the director to determine vital sounds and music. Some directors have clear expectations about how their projects will sound, while others are more open to collaboration. The sound design manager may attend rehearsals to help them develop an appropriate soundtrack.

                         Visual journalism describes the type of report or story where images (pictures, illustrations, or videos) are the most compelling part of a piece. Visual journalism is most effective when reporting on a crime, an accident, war or civil unrest, or an emotional story. The image tells the story better than the narrative in visual journalism. A good journalist understands the value and importance of images. According to the Open School of Journalism, using visuals in journalism has been popular since the late 1800s — and the famous phrase: “a picture is worth a thousand words” was used frequently in the US press from the 1920s. It’s the evolution of technology that ultimately defines the type of visual storytelling that’s possible today, from the no-code web creation platforms we use to build it, to the devices and platforms our audiences use to consume it.


Some of the most popular visual design techniques that are currently used in journalism include:

1 ) Animation- animation is a great way to instantly breathe life into a digital story, From Lottie animations to animated text, movement is an incredibly effective way of grabbing audience’s attention, highlighting key points, and keeping people engaged. Animation can bring a sense of magic to a story.

2 ) Scrollytelling - One of the most prominent visual journalism design techniques is scrollytelling — thanks in part to the astonishing success of editorials from publishers like New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Scrollytelling incorporates elements of interactivity and motion to create captivating cinematic narratives that keep audiences reading. This can involve anything from snippets of text drifting over video backgrounds, to illustrations, typography, audio and graphics all bursting to life on scroll. Not only does this

 encourage readers to keep scrolling, but it also allows you to carefully pace the flow of your content.

3 ) Data Visualisation- it is the best technique to make complicated data easy to understand. From pandemics to wars to scientific discoveries, recent news stories are packed with complicated facts and figures, and things like interactive maps, charts, and infographics are great ways to help audiences process abstract data in a way that is more concrete and meaningful.


Why we need visual journalism-

 1 ) Visual journalism engages people directly to promote trust and representation - There is something powerful about seeing yourself and your community represented with accuracy and nuance in the news. It can foster cultural empowerment and be a restorative force for those often unseen or erased in the media.

2 ) Cuts through the noise: With so much information coming at us all the time, visuals can grab our attention quickly and efficiently. A powerful image or infographic can break through the clutter and make us stop and take notice


3 )Makes complex ideas simpler: Text-heavy content can be daunting, especially for complicated topics. Visuals like charts, graphs, and well-chosen photographs can help us understand complex information much more easily


4 )Evokes emotion: A well-crafted visual story can have a powerful emotional impact. A photo of a war-torn landscape or a child in need can move us in a way that words alone often can't

The The term "politics of an image" refers to the ways in which images are used and interpreted within a political context. It involves analyzing how images are created, circulated, and consumed, and how they can shape public opinion, influence political discourse, and convey ideological messages.


Images have the power to evoke emotions, convey information, and shape narratives. They can be used by political actors to promote their agendas, manipulate public perception, or challenge existing power structures. The politics of an image involves understanding the intentions behind its creation, the context in which it is presented, and the impact it has on individuals and society.


In analyzing the politics of an image, one can consider various factors such as the visual elements, composition, framing, and symbolism used. Additionally, the social, cultural, and historical context in which the image is produced and consumed plays a crucial role in shaping its meaning and political significance.


Studying the politics of an image can provide insights into how visual representations are used to shape public opinion, construct identities, and influence political debates. It helps us understand the power dynamics at play in visual communication and encourages critical thinking about the images we encounter in our daily lives.

                                                                 Ecology of image 

The idea of an "ecology of images" in journalism refers to understanding how images function within a interconnected system, similar to how an ecosystem works. Here's how we can break it down:

Core aspects –

 1 ) Production- Images aren't isolated. We consider who takes them, the choices they make (framing, focus), and the technology used (phone camera vs. professional equipment).

2 ) circulation- How does the image get to the audience? Print, online news platforms, social media – each platform has its own way of presenting visuals.

3 ) consumption- How do people interpret the image? What emotions does it evoke? This is influenced by cultural background and past experiences.

Why it matters : 

1 ) Bias - Framing and selection of visuals can influence perception. Being aware of this bias helps journalists present a balanced view.

2 ) Impact - Images can be powerful. Understanding how they are created and consumed helps journalists be more ethical and impactful in their storytelling.

3 )Context: An image alone can be misleading. Journalists use captions, surrounding text, and multimedia elements to provide context

Visual culture is a field within media studies that examines how images shape our understanding of the world and how power dynamics are embedded within visual representations.


Traditionally, media studies focused on analyzing the content and effects of media forms like television, film, and print. However, the rise of visual communication in the 20th century necessitated a deeper exploration of the role of images themselves.


Here are some core aspects of visual culture within media studies:

1 ) From Text to Image: A Shift in Focus – Media studies initially emerged as a textual discipline, analyzing the messages conveyed through language in newspapers, radio broadcasts, and early television programs. With the invention of photography and film, and later television's growing dominance, visual representations became increasingly central to media experiences.  Visual culture emerged in response to this shift, recognizing the power of images to communicate complex ideas, emotions, and ideologies, often independent of accompanying text.

Soundscape:-

Sound can relay meaning, emotion, memory, and facts through language, music, and field recordings. Sound, when understood as an environment, is a soundscape: a powerful tool that helps humans relate to their surroundings. They can be consciously designed by an individual or group of individuals, or the byproduct of historical, political, and cultural circumstances. 

They may be musical compositions, ethnographic anthropological field recordings, recordings of a rainforest taken by an ecologist, or imaginings of a sound designer/historian ruminating upon the sounds of the past.

The things that make the soundscape of a place different from any other place in the world are soundmarks. The soundmark of your home may be a small fountain bubbling away in the corner of your living room, or the tinkle of a wind chime in your backyard. You like these sounds because they make you feel a certain way, and now they color everyone else’s impression of the sonic environment of your personal space.

Power Of Soundscape:-

All members of the community may have individual reactions to the greater soundscape. This contrast between the soundscape at the micro and macro levels helps paint a picture of the diverse makeup of a 
community. This is the power of the soundscape. 

The study of soundscape:-

It is the subject of acoustic ecology. The idea of soundscape refers to both the natural acoustic environment, consisting of natural sounds, including animal vocalizations and, for instance, the sounds of weather and other natural elements; and environmental sounds created by humans, through musical composition, sound design, and other ordinary human activities including conversation, work, and sounds of mechanical origin resulting from use of industrial technology. The disruption of these acoustic environments results in noise pollution. 

Sound Culture

The sound culture is the auditory environment (or soundscape) located within its wider social and cultural context. The concept of a sound culture (also called an auditory or aural culture) is directly connected to the soundscape.

What are the broader social and cultural influences on what we hear in our everyday lives? 

Social and cultural organisations are largely responsible for the sound landscape that we inhabit and these inevitably change over time.

In the pre-industrial European World one of the defining features of the soundscape was the tolling of the church bell. It told the workers in the field of the progress of their day’s toil but was also an auditory marker of the community briefly enveloped in the sound of the bell. It also reminded those who heard it of the centrality Of the church in their lives. 

The bell's ring was part of the soundscape but the social and religious dimensions, which adds meaning to the sound, are also part of the wider sound culture. Industrialisation created a very different soundscape, the soundscape of modernity. The cities became unprecedentedly loud; ‘the din of modern technology: the roar of elevated trains, the rumble of internal combustion engines, the crackle and hiss of radio transmissions’. 

These sounds, including jazz, were part of the particularly rich and complex sound culture of America’s African population living in the ghettos.  So much of contemporary sound culture is the sound of electronic media; the personalised media of the phone and the iPod. Music, the radio and television at home, recorded sound in the shops, pub and nightclub. 

TYPES:

Sync sound

Sync sound (synchronized sound recording) refers to sound recorded at the time of the filming of movies. It has been widely used in movies since the birth of sound movies.

Even in the silent film era, films were shown with sounds, often with musical accompaniment by a pianist or an orchestra keeping time with the screen action. The first synchronization was a turning recording device marked with a white spot. As the white spot rotated, the cameraman hand-cranked the camera to keep it in sync with the recording. The method was then repeated for playback, but with the projectionist hand cranking the film projector.

Example: a shot of a river with rushing water sounds, and punching sounds during a fight scene are all examples of synchronous sound.

Non Sync sound 

Nonsynchronous sound can also be ambient: nonsynchronous sound is the product of postproduction technicians determining the emotional and intellectual impact of a certain scene through sound. At the simplest level, music is used to determine the audience's response to a particular moment.

Example: Nonsynchronous sound is any noise whose origin you can't see: that gunshot in the dark that almost hits the hero.

So the difference between synchronous vs asynchronous sound in film is the visibility of the corresponding action taking place on camera when the sound is made. When the sound corresponds with an action on screen, it is synchronous. When the sound does not correspond with an action on screen, it is asynchronous.

Natural Sound

Natural sounds are any sounds produced by non-human organisms as well as those generated by natural, non-biological sources within their normal soundscapes. Natural sounds create an acoustic space .

Ambient sound (background noise)

Means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc.

Ambient sound is very important in video and film work. It performs a number of functions including:
●       Providing audio continuity between shots.
●       Preventing an unnatural silence when no other sound is present.
●       Establishing or reinforcing the mood.

What is sound design?

Sound design is the craft of creating an overall sonic palette for a piece of art, especially media like film, TV shows, live theater, commercials, and podcasts.
6 applications for sound design.

Film. Film sound design mostly involves creating sounds that mimic real life. If a scene takes place in a diner in the 1970s, the sound designer might combine the sounds of a kitchen, the clinking of glassware, and some era-specific music drifting from the jukebox.

Television. The duties of a TV sound designer are pretty close to those of a film sound designer. The one main difference with TV is that many shows have episodes that return to the same location time and again. As a result, a TV sound designer might design a core template for scenes shot in those locations so they can create consistency from one episode to the next.

Advertising. If you listen closely, you can hear all kinds of sound effects in TV and radio commercials. Sound designers create sonic palettes that transport audiences to the various worlds where those ads take place. The goal of most commercial sound design is to blend in without being distracting. In most cases, you should barely notice the sound.

Music. You can find examples of sound design in music recordings.

Podcasts. As a purely sound-based storytelling medium, podcasts require careful attention to sound design. This particularly applies to narrative podcasts, where the right sonic textures can transport a listener into the world of the story.

Live theater. Sound designers make immense contributions to live theater. Theater sound design may include sound effects, pre-recorded voiceover, and music coming from an onstage radio or television.
 
6 elements of sound design

Voice-over. Voice-over is pre-recorded audio, typically provided by one of the actors in a production. It can serve as a narration or come from an off-stage (or off-screen) character.

Ambiance. Ambiance describes the sonic tapestries created by a sound designer to create a sense of time and place.

Foley sounds. Foley involves using physical objects to create sound effects, such as using a pair of coconut shells to mimic the sound of galloping horses.

Audio effects. Audio effects consist of various sounds related to specific objects — like a ringing telephone, a firing gun, or a revving motorcycle. They can also describe standalone audio cues that layer on top of ambient soundscapes.

Music. Sound design often involves music — both preexisting music licensed for a production and original music created specifically for the project.

Live microphones. In live theater productions, a sound designer is often in charge of sound reinforcement, which involves miking actors and projecting their voices through a theater’s speakers. 

MICROPHONES

A microphone, called a mic or mike, is a transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, hearing aids, public address systems for concert halls and public events, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, sound recording, two-way radios, megaphones, and radio and television broadcasting. They are also used in computers for recording voice, speech recognition, VoIP, and for other purposes such as ultrasonic sensors or knock sensors.

Dynamic

Dynamic microphones are microphones that convert sound into an electrical signal by means of electromagnetism. They fall into two categories, moving coil and ribbon microphones.

MOVING COIL MICROPHONES

Moving coil microphones are probably easiest to understand, because they are basically built like a loudspeaker: A coil is glued to the rear of a membrane, and there is a strong magnet surrounding this coil. When sound waves hit the microphone, the membrane moves to the rhythm of the sound waves, and the coil on its back moves along with it. The relative movement of the coil within its (stationary) magnetic gap induces a small signal voltage in this coil.

Moving coil microphones are often preferred for use on stage, because they are quite sturdy and do not require external power. In the studio, engineers usually prefer condenser or in some cases ribbon microphones, which are less robust but offer superior sound reproduction.

RIBBON MICS

Ribbon microphones work by the same basic principle of electromagnetic induction. However, instead of having a membrane and a coil, a ribbon transducer uses a narrow strip of extremely thin aluminum foil. Such a thin piece of aluminum ribbon is much lighter than a membrane with a coil of copper wire attached to it. A ribbon transducer is therefore able to follow the movements of the sound waves more accurately than a moving coil capsule.

However, with just one conductor inside the magnetic gap instead of a whole coil of wire, it also produces much, much lower output.

By nature, ribbon mics are bidirectional, i.e. they are equally sensitive to sound coming from the front and sound coming from the rear. But sound waves coming from the sides do not set the ribbon in motion. This pickup pattern is called figure-8.

Ribbon mics are very fragile and must be treated with great care.

Condenser 

While dynamic microphones are popular for stage use, due to their rugged construction, condenser microphones have always been the preferred type for studio recording. The British call them “capacitor microphones” – and for a reason, too. You may remember from physics class that a capacitor is essentially two metal plates in close proximity. The closer they are, the higher the capacitance.

A condenser capsule is constructed similarly. It consists of a thin membrane in close proximity to a solid metal plate. The membrane or diaphragm, as it is often called, must be electrically conductive, at least on its surface. When sound waves hit the diaphragm, it moves back and forth relative to the solid backplate. In other words, the distance between the two capacitor plates changes. As a result, the capacitance changes to the rhythm of the sound waves.

The condenser capsule’s output voltage is actually quite high, but it produces almost no current, because so little energy is stored in this small capacitor. Condenser microphones therefore require external power. Condenser microphones, therefore, offer superior sound quality. Also, condenser microphones usually offer much higher sensitivity (i.e. output) and lower noise than dynamic microphones.

Directional 

Directionality is a microphones sensitivity to sound relative to the direction or angle from which the sound arrives. There are a number of different directional patterns available, and these are plotted in graphs known as polar patterns.

The three basic directional types of microphones are omnidirectional, unidirectional, and bidirectional.

- Omnidirectional Microphones
Omni mics are equally sensitive to sound arriving from all angles. Omni mics have the advantage of sounding particularly open and natural when compared to unidirectional or bi-directional alternatives. This attribute makes them a great choice in studio environments with good acoustics, or live applications where the stage volume is low. The disadvantage is obviously the lack of directionality; if you need to reject background noise, room ambiance, or monitor feedback on-stage - omni's are not a suitable selection.

- Unidirectional mics
Unidirectional mics are most sensitive to sound arriving from directly in front – the angle referred to as 0 degrees – and less sensitive in other directions.
Applications: Live sound, Studio recording (particularly in less than ideal acoustic environments)
 
- Bi-directional (figure-of-eight)
The coverage or pickup angle is only about 90 degrees at both the front and the rear. This mic could be used for picking up two opposing sound sources, such as a vocal duet, for example.
 
BASICS OF SOUND CONCEPT

INTRODUCTION:

A sound is a vibration that propagates through a medium in the form of a mechanical wave.
Only acoustic waves that have frequencies lying between about 20 Hz and 20 kHz, the audio frequency range, elicit an auditory percept in humans.
Sound in film and television is meant to support the story of a narrative, documentary, or commercial film or television program. Sound may tell the story directly, or it may be used indirectly to enhance the story effects of the movie.

Although there are separate perceptual mechanisms for sound and picture, the sound may be integrated by the audience along with the picture into a complete whole, without differentiation. In such a state, the sound and picture together can become greater than the sum of the parts. In most instances, film and television sound is constructed in post production utilising many pieces of sound, mixed seamlessly together to create a complete whole. 

PROPERTIES OF SOUND:

1.Acoustics:

Acoustics is a term referring to the qualities that determine a room’s ability to reflect sound waves in such a way as to produce distinct hearing.

Acoustic properties of sound:

Loudness -It is the volume or level of the sound. Intensity is measured in decibels (dB).

Pitch - It is the perceived "highness" or "lowness" of the sound. Pitch is the characteristic of sound by which an acute (or shrill) note can be distinguished from a grave or a flat note.

Timbre - is the quality of a musical note or sound or tone that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices or musical instruments.

Rhythm - is a sound's rhythmic qualities, or the pulse, the beat. Time is a factor here, as rhythm can be fast or slow. The speed of rhythm is its TEMPO.

2. Recording:
Sound recording and reproduction is the electrical, mechanical, electronic, or digital inscription and re-creation of sound waves, such as spoken voice, singing, instrumental music, or sound effects. It is the transcription of invisible vibrations in air onto a storage medium such as a phonograph disc. The two main classes of sound recording technology are analog recording and digital recording.
 
ANALOGUE RECORDING

The Analog recorder uses microphone which converts sound waves into electrical analog signal. Analog signal can be recorded onto cassette tapes and LP vinyl records.

The Digital recorder also uses microphone to tap the analog signal and converts this acquired analog signal into digital form (i.e. series of numbers). It can be recorded onto CD (Compact Disc), HD (Hard Drive), SSD, memories (RAM/ROM), optical drive, streamed live on internet, stored on computers or servers or mobile phones etc

Microphones – are a type of transducer - a device that converts energy from one form to another.

3. MIXING:

Audio mixing is the process by which multiple sounds are combined into one or more channels. In the process, a source's volume level, frequency content, dynamics, and panoramic position are manipulated or enhanced. This practical, aesthetic, or otherwise creative treatment is done in order to produce a finished version that is appealing to listeners. Audio mixing is practised for music, film, television and live sound. The process is generally carried out by a mixing engineer operating a mixing console or digital audio workstation.

4. SOUND EFFECTS:

A sound effect (or audio effect) is an artificially created or enhanced sound, or sound process used to emphasise artistic or other content of films, television shows, live performance, animation, video games, music, or other media. Traditionally, in the twentieth century, they were created with foley.

Foley – is the reproduction of everyday sounds for use in filmmaking. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. The best 
Foley art is so well integrated into a film that goes unnoticed by the audience. It helps to create a sense of reality within a scene.

Decay – Decay is the fade out of the reverberation of a sound. In other words, the decay refers to how the sound fades away in terms of a quick decay, or gradual.
Walla – A sound effect for the murmur of a crowd in the background. Walla is often used as subliminal aural communication and sets a mood or a tone.

SOUND BITE:

A sound bite is a short clip of speech or music extracted from a longer piece of audio, often used to promote or exemplify the full-length piece.
Due to its brevity, the sound bite often overshadows the broader context in which it was spoken, and can be misleading or inaccurate. The insertion of sound bites into news broadcasts or documentaries is open to manipulation, leading to conflict over journalistic ethics.

Categories of sound in Film:

Dialogue – Cinematic dialogue is oral speech between characters

Voice-over – (also known as off-camera or off-stage commentary)
The voice-over may be spoken by someone who appears elsewhere in the production or by a specialist voice actor. Voice-overs are often used to create the effect of storytelling by a character/omniscient narrator. 

Music – is an art form whose medium is sound.

What is a Visual?

Visual journalism is the combination of text, images and layout. Visual journalism is a much wider concept than photojournalism. It is essentially creating the overall visual appearance of a newspaper, magazine, TV-channel or so on.

● infographics- charts, graphs, maps, and diagrams.
● news design- News design is the process of arranging editorial material on a newspaper page, and the resulting arrangement include layout, makeup, and pagination.
● photojournalism

Visual journalism can effectively help our audience to understand a story better. They say a picture can be worth a thousand words and that's certainly true. A simple map or graphic can really convey a story in a visual way that can be immediately grasped.

Visual culture is concerned with the production, circulation and consumption of images and the changing nature of subjectivity.

VISUAL GRAMMAR

Elements

● Objects – The basic elements we have to work with. Can be abstract or concrete.
● Structures – The patterns formed from our basic elements. Can be abstract or concrete.
● Activities – The processes we can represent with our basic elements and patterns.
● Relations – The relationships between objects, patterns, and processes. They’re the way everything in your design relates to each other and the viewer.

Various types of Visual Grammar

1. Points – A position on a coordinate system. For eg- if we connect two points we get a line, and a triangle if three points are connected.

2. Volumes – An empty space defined by surfaces, lines, and points. Volumes have three dimensions.

3. Size – It can be large or small. They are perceived relative to the person viewing, other forms in the composition, and the format of the design.

4. Color – we perceive different wavelengths of light as color. A form can be any color, though we are limited to seeing only those colors in the visual spectrum. Imagine the traffic lights for instance. They’re just colours but we learn that red means stop, green means go and yellow means step on the metal because you can make it before it turns red. Every channel has their own colour.

5. Typography- Typography is how your words look like.

6. Balance, Rhythm and Contrast- When the visual weights of objects in a composition are in equilibrium, the composition is in balance. For eg- TV anchors are dressed in an appropriate manner relating to their role in the society. Every news programme, soap opera has a musical connotation.

7. Space- Space is the empty areas between major and minor objects and is as important to a design as the areas where the space is filled with objects. Learning to see and use the space in your designs is one of the most important things any designer can learn. You need to consider how each element/letter relates to each other, give them the precise breathing room they need, this is usually referred to as negative space (positive space are the actual letters).

8. Weight- All objects in a design have a visual weight based on size, color, form, surrounding space, etc. Our eye is drawn to elements with the greatest visual weight.

9. Background/ Foreground- The position of objects, their relative weights, the space around them and, their relative proportions all contribute to which elements are seen as being in the foreground and which are seen as part of the background.

10. Grid and alignment- Grid is mostly hidden but you'll see them if you open a book or a newspaper, but (no matter what you’re designing) following a grid will structure your design and make it more pleasant and easier to digest. Alignment is especially important with text, there are several ways to align it but my rule of thumb is to align it left. It always depends on what and for whom you’re designing of course, but generally, people read from left to right, top to bottom, which makes text that is center or right aligned much more difficult to read.

11. Frame- Try to direct the eye to what matters, crop/frame images to make your subject stand out or to reinforce your message. It’s all about telling the right story and telling it well.

12. Visual concept- This is the idea behind your design. What do you mean with it and what’s the deeper meaning behind the superficial image. This is what distinguish a great design from something you can download from a stock website. People say don’t judge a book by its cover but that is always done.
 
What is visual culture?

Very broadly, visual culture is everything that is seen, that is produced to be seen, and the way in which it is seen and understood. It is that part of culture that communicates through visual means.  According to Nicholas Mirzoeff, visual culture can be defined as "visual culture is not just a part of out life, it is our everyday life".

Visual culture is perhaps best understood as a tactic for studying the functions of a world addressed through pictures, images and visualisation, rather than through texts and words.

Visual culture studies

Visual culture is a growing interdisciplinary field of study, which emerged out of the interaction of anthropology, art history, media studies and many other disciplines that focus on visual objects or the way pictures and images are created and used within a society.

Importance of Visual Culture

Our experiences are more visual and visualized than ever before. In the era of the visual screen, our viewpoint is crucial. For most people, life is mediated through television, film and the internet.

The visual culture approach acknowledges the reality of living in a world of cross mediation.
Images often move across social arenas from documentary images to advertisement to amatuer videos to new images to artworks. Each change in context produces a change in meaning. A single image can serve multitudes of purposes, appear in a range of settings, and mean different things to different people.

Decoding an Image

We decode, or read, complex images almost instantly, giving little thought to our process of decoding. We decode images by interpreting clues to intended, unintended, and even suggested meanings. These clues may be formal elements of the image, such as colour, shade and contrast, or the socio-historical context in which it is presented.

All images have two levels of meaning:

The denotative meaning of the image refers to it's literal descriptive meaning.

The connotative meanings rely on cultural and historical context of the image and its viewers.

POLITICS OF AN IMAGE

Introduction

Human culture is a visual culture. From cave paintings to selfies, we have always used images to tell stories about our lives, experiences and understanding of the world. 
These images are particularly potent when they not only depict, but instruct us about social norms – when they shape attitudes and behaviour on everything from the role of women to ideas about nationhood. 

But the idea that a picture “never lies” is a powerful – and inaccurate – adage. For they do not always tell the whole story. And the fact that images may be strategically constructed, manipulated or chosen carefully to convey an impression, can often go unnoticed by the people looking at them.
The beauty of photograph is that it reinvents and periodizes the event and has the same intensity as the of real time event triggering the response and reaction as of the same happening.

Reasons for the Development

The reasons for the development of politics in an image are obvious: footage of the World Trade Centre attacks and photos from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo (to give just a few examples) have clearly demonstrated that images not only respond to political events, but also play an important part in shaping them. However at times, the visual of a rape victim, on the electronic media, the NET or in print, is likely to raise the hackles of the common man and woman sitting in front of his/her television set watching the news. So, when images are used to perpetuate a given message to a wider public, it is perhaps logical. But does it protect the privacy and dignity of the person whose image we are choosing to project without the permission of the said person, living or injured or dead?  This is what politics of image is all about, the perspective that is attached to the image by the media.

Politicians and Image

Politicians recognise the fact that picture in a newspaper is worth many speeches. Images makes a person look more powerful. A news article without an image is often not read. Elections are more or less a number play, and in this Politics of image play an important role.
Images are enough to project a said politician as hard or soft, firm or rude, warm or cold. President 

Donald Trump constantly uses images on social media to create an impression of a certain kind of success, power, and leadership. He also appears to be ever mindful of the image he portrays, putting great effort into his stance and gestures, and displays of presidential power. 

One shot is enough to create an image in the minds of the viewer. Before elections, politicians often hire people to do their image building.

Criticism

However, visuals convey reality sometimes incorrectly. They can at times mould the actual reality to project a rather narrow version of an image. For eg- a video of Finland PM went viral showing her dancing, laughing and having fun, many people perceived it that instead of pursuing her duties, she usually engages in such activities but it could just be that she had completed all her work beforehand and enjoyed some free time after so many days.

Sometimes the slip of tongues or certain incidences are repeatedly projected by the media.

For eg- The recent case of Noida woman abusing her security guard, the slap was shown repeatedly by the media to grab the attention of the viewers and to project the vicious nature of the woman even if she had only slapped him once.

The play of TRPs and sensational news affects the politics of image in the media.

ECOLOGY OF AN IMAGE
 
Introduction

● 'An ecology of images,' an approach to making and reproducing photographs that would protect both the meaning of particular pictures and the integrity of the reality they depict.

● Images are playing an increasingly important role in visualizing ecologies in our complex, designed world. Yet what of the ecological and ontological character of images themselves?

● The image is beyond representation of a dynamic form of design that takes hold of eye and mind. It is as capable of violence and ecological destruction as any material form.

● Ecology of the image designates a critical and reflexive engagement with the environments we have designed for ourselves - including the environment of signs - but it also points to the crucial role of meaning making and image creation in the broad project of Sustainability.                                                                                     
 


● This diagram summarizes the ideas behind an ‘ecology of images. An image always exists in a set of contexts. It is always part of an ‘image community’, which it works with or against.

A camera is a remote sensing device that can capture and store or transmit images. Light is collected and focused through an optical system on a sensitive surface (sensor) that converts intensity and frequency of the electromagnetic radiation to information, through chemical or electronic processes.
The image sensor is made up of millions of light sensitive photodiodes set on a grid, where each photodiode records a tiny portion of the image as a numeric value that corresponds to a specific brightness level, which is then used to create your image.
 
Basic Components of a Camera:

1. Lens: The lens is one of the most vital parts of a camera. The light enters through the lens, and this is where the photo process begins. Lenses can be either fixed permanently to the body or interchangeable. They can also vary in focal length, aperture, and other details.

2. Viewfinder: The viewfinder can be found on all DSLRs and some models of digital compacts. On DSLRs, it will be the main visual source for image-taking, but many of today’s digital compacts have replaced the typical viewfinder with an LCD screen.

Most digital cameras have two viewing systems – the optical viewfinder and the electronic viewfinder.
While both systems show you what the lens sees, the electronic viewfinder can tell you other things about the nature of your digital image. One area where the electronic viewfinder is superior is in determining colour balance.

3. Body: The body is the main portion of the camera, and bodies can be a number of different shapes and sizes. DSLRs tend to be larger bodied and a bit heavier, while there are other consumer cameras that are a conveniently smaller size and even able to fit into a pocket.

4. Shutter Release: The shutter release button is the mechanism that “releases” the shutter and therefore enables the ability to capture the image. The length of time the shutter is left open or “exposed” is determined by the shutter speed.

5. Aperture: The aperture affects the image’s exposure by changing the diameter of the lens opening, which controls the amount of light reaching the image sensor.

6. Image Sensor: The image sensor converts the optical image to an electronic signal, which is then sent to your memory card. There are two main types of image sensors that are used in most digital cameras: CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and CCD (Charge-coupled Device). Both forms of the sensor accomplish the same task, but each has a different method of performance.

7. Memory Card: The memory card stores all of the image information, and they range in size and speed capacity. The main types of memory cards available are CF and SD cards, and cameras vary on which type that they require.

8. Flash: The on-board flash will be available on all cameras except some professional grade DSLRs. It can sometimes be useful to provide a bit of extra light during dim, low light situations. The camera’s computer determines the need for flash according to the exposure metering, focusing, and zoom systems. On compact cameras, the built-in flash is triggered to go off in perfect sync with the shutter, but it’s hard to control the timing and intensity of the flash. This can result in washed-out photos.
 
9. User Controls: The controls on each camera will vary depending on the model and type. Your basic digital compacts may only have auto settings that can be used for different environments, while a DSLR will have numerous controls for auto and manual shooting along with custom settings.

Camera movement is a filmmaking technique that causes a change in frame or perspective through the movement of the camera. Camera movement allows cinematographers and directors to shift the audience's view without cutting. Specific types of camera movements in film also can create a psychological and emotional effect on the audience. 

Static shot: A static shot has no camera movement at all. It is achieved by locking a camera to a fixed-position typically with a tripod, used for showcasing an actors’ performance.

Pan shot: The camera pan directs a camera horizontally left or right,  used to reveal new information to the audience.
When done quickly with speed, the fast camera movement is known as a whip pan. Whip pans are one of the best camera movements to add energy to a shot. 

Tilt shot: Tilt camera movements direct a camera upward or downward. Jurassic Park, he uses the tilt when first introducing the dinosaurs. The camera tilt perfectly captures the emotions of the film’s characters while eliciting awe in the audience.

Roll: The camera roll is a rotational camera movement that rotates the camera over its side on its long axis. Rolls can be dizzying and unnatural. For this reason, filmmakers use it to disorient the audience or create uneasiness. 

Tracking shot: A tracking shot is any shot that physically moves the camera through the scene for an extended amount of time.

Tilt and Pan shot: When the camera moves up to down and left to right also.

Low and High angle shot: The shot in which the camera moves from the legs of the character to the head.

TYPES OF SHOTS

Series of shots come together to form a scene. Series of scene come together to form a sequence. A shot must add to the information of the viewer.

1. Extreme Long Shot- The extreme wide shot or extreme long shot is all about showing the world in which the story takes place. In an extreme wide you will see large landscapes in the frame. Whether it is the desert or outer space.

2. Medium Shot- shows your character from the waist up. Medium shots are often used in dialog scenes. As we get closer to our subjects, we can see things that we wouldn’t catch in a wide, like body language. We can see crossed arms or someone who talks with their hands.

3. Close up Shot- frames the character’s face. In a close-up shot one can see even more detail that tells us how a character feels. A close-up highlights emotional clues in the eyes and you can see a twitch or a tear that you might miss in a medium shot. It similar to your passport size photograph.

4. Medium close up shot- Halfway between the close-up and the medium shot is the medium close-up that frames the subject from the shoulders up. This shot might be used if you want to show more body language as you capture some emotion and facial expressions.

5. Extreme close up shot- frames even tighter on a face (or subject), highlighting facial features more. It usually frames a particular part of the face like the eyes or the mouth. It is often used as more drama increases.

6. Two Shot:- When the scenes have only two people in the scenes known as two shots. If it has three character, it known as three shoot. If it has four character then it is known as four shot.

7. OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT:- When two characters are talking to each other in which one of the characters has the camera behind it but the other person is in the frame of the head to shoulder.

8. MOVING SHOT:-Moving the things or a person here to there.

9. REVERSE SHOT:-This is also known as reestablishment shot. The shot in which all three characters of the scenes has taken in the character without cutting the role of the third person.

10. HOOK:- Hook means the suspense scenes which create enthusiasm between the viewers.

11. FADE IN/OUT:- When the scenes fade slowly. That is known as fade In and when the scenes vanish slowly this is known as fade out.

12. SPLIT SCREEN- When the screen divided in the two parts and showing two different scenes this is known as split screen.

13. CONTINUITY:- When many shots taken a place and then edit known as continuity in the shots.

14. TRACKING SHOT:- The tracking path of the character taken by the camera known as the tracking shot.
 
DEPTH OF FIELD

WHAT IS THE DEPTH OF FIELD IN PHOTOGRAPHY?

● In photography, the depth of field (DoF) is the portion of the image that is crisp and in focus. The distance between the closest and farthest objects in your images determines how sharp and in focus they are.

● It is important to remember that depth of field refers to the amount of a picture that is acceptable for focus. Consider taking pictures of two subjects that are at two different distances from you. Depth of field is defined as the distance between two subjects when just that portion of the scene between them is crisp and everything else is blurry.

● Before we go into that, let's become familiar with the most prevalent depth of field terminology. Understanding depth of field is crucial for getting all the significant features you want in your image in focus.

WHAT IS SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD?

● The line between the closest and farthest parts that are crisp and in focus is quite short when there is a shallow depth of field; in other words, just a small section of your image is in focus.

● The short depth of field and narrow depth of field are other names for shallow depth of field. Understanding what a shallow depth of field is and, more importantly, when you should utilize one, is crucial.

● The factors listed below influence a shallow depth of field, with the aperture playing the most significant role (the larger the aperture, the shallower the depth of field).

WHAT IS A LARGE DEPTH OF FIELD?

● A larger depth of field, on the other hand, results in a bigger portion of the image is in focus. In this instance, there is a considerable distance between the closest and farthest components that are relatively sharp.

● Deep depth of field or huge depth of field are other terms for a large depth of field, which can be created by a number of factors, with the focal length being one of the most crucial. For instance, wider-angle lenses enable a deeper depth of field.

● Depending on the circumstances and the subject you are photographing, choose your depth of field.

● To choose the optimal depth of field for your photography, it is first important to understand the key elements that influence depth of focus so that you may subsequently modify the DOF in your photographs in accordance with your preferences and objectives.

DEPTH OF FIELD FACTORS IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Here are four main factors that affect depth of field in photography:

1. DEPTH OF FIELD AND APERTURE

● The relationship between aperture and depth of field is the first consideration.

● The depth of field in an image is correlated with the aperture in photography. Simply explained, the depth of field will be shallower if you choose a larger aperture. On the other side, the depth of field in your image will be bigger the narrower the aperture you pick.

● There are other factors that influence DOF, but as a depth of field photography tip, change your aperture first in accordance with the depth of field and the elements in your image that you want in focus before considering other exposure triangle adjustments.

2. FOCAL LENGTH AND DOF

● Your focal length and depth of field are the second determining factors.

● In this situation, the depth of field will be bigger the shorter the focal length, whereas the depth of field will be shallower the longer the focal length. According to this reasoning, a 50 mm lens' depth of focus will be shallower than a 35 mm lens' DOF.

● This is due to a physical cause. When using longer focal lengths, such as telephoto lenses, there is a relationship between magnification and depth of field; the elements in the far distance will be larger and, as a result, it will be harder to focus on a large area. When using a wide-angle lens, however, all the elements in the far distance are smaller, making it easier to focus on everything.

● The scene you wish to photograph will determine which lens has the best depth of field. For instance, telephoto and quick lenses with a wide aperture are frequently the best lenses for a shallow depth of field.

● Wide-angle lenses, on the other hand, are the greatest for having a deep field since you can focus at the hyperfocal distance and have nearly the entire image in a respectable focus.

3. FOCUSING ON DISTANCE AND DOF

● Distance and depth of field are likewise two components that cannot be separated. The depth of field will be shallower the closer you are to the topic you wish to photograph, and the depth of field will be bigger the farther away you are from the main subject.

● A helpful DOF tip is to change the depth of field before mounting the tripod so you may relocate if you need a greater depth of field because you are too close to the foreground. If you move in accordance with the depth of field and concentrating distance from your primary subject, you'll receive the desired outcome.

4. SENSOR SIZE AND DOF

● The link between the camera sensor size and depth of field is the final consideration.

● Given that we are utilizing the same focal length, the depth of field will increase with increasing sensor size while decreasing sensor size will result in a reduced depth of field.

● Please take note that we are comparing the depth of field with the same focal length. The depth of field will be smaller in cameras with larger sensors and greater in cameras with cropped sensors if we take into account the same field of view.

● Since the sensor size is cropped in APS-C cameras, for instance, normal focal lengths are multiplied by 1.5. The depth of field will be less in the cropped-sensor camera because, as we discussed above in the focal length vs. DOF section, a 35 mm in a full-frame camera is roughly equivalent to a 52 mm focal length in an APS-C camera.
 
FOCUS EFFECTS:

Deep Focus: This approach keeps all elements in the frame. Used extensively by realists. In this approach, the foreground, middle ground, and background are all in relatively sharp focus. (viewer almost has a choice where they can focus on either of the subjects etc.)
 
Shallow Focus: In this approach several different planes of focus are incorporated within a single image. This manipulates viewer’s attention. Shallow focus often uses the play between soft focus and sharp focus to achieve this. (more directed)
 
Follow Focus: In which the focus is changed to permit the camera to keep a moving subject in focus. (the focus remains on the subject)
 
Shifting Focus/Rack Focus: In which the focus is changed to direct attention away from one subject and toward another in a different ground. (shifting the gaze from one subject to another, the presence of the camera more evident).

What Does Light Mean in Photography

When it comes to photography, the type of lighting that you use is one of the most important elements of any photo. Light in photography refers to how the light source, which can be natural or artificial, is positioned in relation to your subject.
 
How lighting affects your photography?

Whether you’re doing portrait photography or still life or landscape, so much of your lighting choices will depend on the features of your subject, and how you want them to be portrayed in your photos.
If you’re doing a beauty shoot where the focus is flawless features, the type of lighting that you use will likely be very different than a photoshoot where you want to emphasize the personality and distinctive lines of your model’s face. 

Different Types of Lighting

There are two main kinds of light: natural and artificial. Natural light is anything that occurs without human intervention, so it can be the direct light of the sun on a bright day, the diffused light created by a cloudy or foggy day, or even the light of the moon at night. On the other side of things, artificial light can often be moved around and adjusted to fit your situation. 

Natural Light

If you want to use natural light in your photography, it’s important to understand the angle of the sun and how that will affect your composition. For example, for most of the day, the sun is directly overtop so your subject will be lit from above. A sunny day without clouds will result in more intense shadows, while a sky full of clouds will diffuse the sunlight so that the contrast of light on your subject is less harsh.

Front Light (or Flat Light)

Front light occurs when the light source is directly in front of your subject. The light will be spread evenly across the photo, with no section more or less exposed than the rest.
Flat light can be good for portraits, especially if your subject has wrinkles or blemishes that they want to de-emphasize.

Backlight

Backlit photos are when the light source is behind the subject, with the subject in between the light and your camera. This can be a great opportunity to play with silhouette and long shadows in your photography.

Soft Light

Soft lighting occurs when your light source is diffused, so that the effect is more subtle than it would be with a direct source of light. By using soft light, you will end up with less intense shadows, if any at all, and a lower contrast between the darks and lights in your photo.

Hard Light

The opposite of soft or diffused light, hard lighting is when your light source is pointed directly at your subject. It results in high contrast and intensity, bright whites and dark shadow, and is often created by making use of the midday sun.

Rim Light

Rim light can be created using a form of backlighting, where the light is at an angle from behind or above. The light will hit your subject in a way that creates a glowing outline or highlight around the subject, depending on the direction that your light is coming from. This technique is useful for distinguishing the subject from the background by providing definition.

Loop Lighting

Loop lighting is a specific technique used for portraits. The name refers to a “loop” of shadow from the nose on the cheek.

Broad Lighting

Often used for graduation photos, broad light for photography is a type of side lighting where the side of the model closest to the camera is lit, and the side farther away is in shadow

Short Lighting

Short lighting is pretty much the exact opposite of broad lighting. In this case, the side of the face that is closest to the camera is in shadow, whereas the farthest side is in the light.

Split Lighting

When the light hits your subject at a 90-degree angle, that is called split lighting. This results in a straight line down the center of your subject’s face, with one side entirely lit and the other side completely in shadow. This is a great option for a dramatic portrait.
 
VISUAL PERSPECTIVE

INTRDOUCTION

Visual perception is the ability to see and interpret one's visual environment. It is the brain's ability to make sense of what the eyes see. The visual perception definition does not only include seeing; it also includes organising and interpreting visual information.

TV AUDIENCE

Television audiences have a short attention span. Place many objects in a room and include a TV screen, the eye will naturally be drawn to the TV, first. Its glowing phosphors attract human attention greater than anything else. Once the “data” from the screen is processed, other objects in the room gain attention.

How to keep the imagination interested. The imagination constantly scans the visual information for clues for meaning. It looks from left to right and top to bottom. It reads the picture in the same pattern that books are read. Once it reaches the conclusion that it has read everything, it stops generating pleasure. The audience member either gets sleepy or takes action to find other visual information.
Stimulating the imagination has been an important part of theatre for the past century. When an actor prepares a role, he works to create an imaginary world using his imagination to create a visual picture. He recalls as many memories as possible from all five senses to stimulate a picture in his mind. For TV, pictures and sound when used to suggest the other three senses, touch, taste and smell, keep the imagination interested. This explains why cooking shows, although visually simple, are so popular.

Time for the imagination is expressed in music. Time is rhythm and tempo. In a live concert, music alone is enough to stimulate the imagination. But on TV, sound is secondary. However, rhythm and tempo have an equivalent visual expression.

Russian filmmakers from the early days of silent filmmaking understood the importance of speed of changing shots to keep the eye interested. This was the beginning of montage editing. Some shots were longer in time and others quick paced just like a musical score.
This is the practice in talk shows and news interviews in all of modern TV. However it is not enough.
For example, there is a background image and then one or more images inside windows and then foreground text to be read. The speed at which these elements hide and appear creates a visual musicality. Sometimes, there are three elements, sometimes four and five and then one, and so on. This is known as layering.

Visual elements have priority over sound.

To test if a TV program has visual priority, turn off the sound. Can the show be understood?  Text as a layer on the screen should guide the viewer through the story.
Sports shows are popular because they can be understood without the sound. The score and time are visually displayed. The same announcer describing a sports event on TV uses more emotion than on radio where he must paint a visual picture. The cheering crowds give the imagination, audio clues as to how to interpret the pictures he is seeing.

EMOTIONAL VISUALS

Strong emotional visuals win over the portrayal of fact. In American TV journalism history, the defining moment was the reporting of Walter Cronkite in 1963 on the death of US President Kennedy. He choked up live and cried on camera. His emotion broke the stereotype of the unemotional host. The information he provided was forgotten but his feelings were not. This shows that the past solution of highly charged negative emotions is NOT the only solution for TV. The Orthodox emotions of love, heroism, confession and forgiveness are strong positive emotions lacking in the media space. Honesty and confession of bias, of our journalist on air will break through the natural suspicion of the viewer.

CONCLUSION

EFP

Electronic field production, or “EFP” is a television-industry term for a video production that takes place “in the field” — in other words, outside of a formal television studio.

Examples of EFP are everything from truly outside, field events such as nature documentaries or reporting on spontaneous riots or car chases, to sporting events, awards shows, concerts, interviews that take place outside of a formal production studio.

EFP crews range from a single camera operator or crew of two (camera operator with sound mixer) capturing high-quality imagery, to a multiple-camera setup utilizing videography, photography, and advanced graphics and sound and often an entire mobile production truck. It also includes mobile journalism, and sometimes uses OB vans.

Sports broadcasts make up the majority of EFPs.

ENG

Electronic news-gathering (ENG) is when reporters and editors make use of electronic video and audio technologies in order to gather and present news. The process of reporting events and activities that occur outside the television studio. In modern news operations, however, it also includes SNG (Satellite News Gathering) and DSNG (Digital Satellite News Gathering)

ADVANTAGES OF ENG

i) Speed: The technology grants speed to news reporting as the videotapes and digital discs from the ENG machines are available and ready for editing immediately after they are recorded. The use of ENG has made television news reporting more lively, faster, and flexible. The print medium may wait to tell their readers what has happened in their next edition but the television medium is showing and telling the viewers exactly what is happening now and with vivid pictures! Indeed ENG brings the people to the news events.

ii) Editing flexibility: The technology allows for the quick construction of a basic news story. Audio and visual effects can be added for emphasis. This means that the reporter can edit his stories right there at the locations even before reaching the studio.

iii) Mobility: The use of helicopters, microwave and satellite news gathering equipment have made it possible to reach further and faster to any part of the world to cover present happenings. This therefore adds depth and breadth to news coverage as well as goes live from the scene of a story.

• A successful ENG team produces a video segment that enables viewers to experience the event as if they were there.
• The reporter and Cameraperson must be prepared for every situation that might present itself during the reporting of an event.
• Library and internet resources to obtain background information on a larger scale.
• Phone calls and face-to-face informal meetings to obtain background information.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENG AND EFP

•  They are very similar but in EFP- electronic field production- but it is carefully planned out much like a studio production and in ENG- electronic news gathering- there is no time for preproduction because you are recording unplanned events like breaking news or developing news.

• ENG mostly covers breaking news whereas EFP covers documentary, sports, parades.

• Contrasted with the production values of EFP, in electronic journalism or ENG, the emphasis is on quickness and agility in acquisition and rapidity in the process of editing, leading to final transmission to the audience is the goal. The two terms are often seen paired as EFP-ENG and vice versa.

INTRODUCTION: CONCEPT OF TV NEWS EDITING
 
● The concept of editing in television news differs from that of editing news for print publications.

● In commercial television and film production, the "shooting ratio," or amount of film or tape shot divided by the length of the finished program, averages about 10:1. In other words, for every minute of edited program you see, ten minutes or more of tape was recorded by the camera crew.
 
TRANSFORMATION OF TV EDITING

Development of editing process for television broadcasting can be divided into three phases:

Physical cutting of film:

In the initial phase, there was no concept of editing. It was the cameraman who stopped cranking (rolling) the magazine (film roll) when the shot was over or the shot changed and started cranking again for the next shot. Each shot was planned in such a way that the entire act had to be performed in a single go without any cuts.

● Electro-magnetic video tape editing:

During 1950s, magnetic videotape recording machines were invented, and the editing process became much easier. Ampex Corporation manufactured VR-1000, a black and white videotape recorder (VTR). It had the same prevailing linear method of editing.

● Digital Non-Linear Editing:

Non-linear editing system was introduced in the form of CMX 600 in 1971. It was specified as a RAVE or Random-Access Video Editor by CMX. It had two black and white monitors, one for edited video and the second one for preview. In the preview monitor the editor could view the original footage and select the editing points.

Gradually the technology developed and video editing became easier. Today, there are many such apps available, with the help of which people can do basic video editing on their smartphones.

VIDEO EDITING IN TV

● The ultimate aim of any editing process is to create a final product i.e., film or any video programme. We can divide the editing process into two stages: rough edit and final edit.

● Rough edit is just putting relevant videos or visuals with the audio track. These are fine-tuned later on by trimming/expanding as per the requirement of the story.

● Adding the suitable VFX and transitions to any film/programme makes the entire production crisp, meaningful and attractive.
 
 
TWO TYPES OF EDITING: LINEAR AND NON-LINEAR

1) Linear editing:

● Linear video editing is a mechanical process that uses linear steps one cut at a time (or a series of programmed cuts) to its conclusion. It also uses Camcorders, VCRs, Edit Controllers, and Mixers to perform the edit functions.
 
2) Non-Linear editing:

● In digital video editing, this method allows you to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of the sequence in the clip.

● This method is similar in concept to the cut-and-paste technique used in film editing from the beginning and allows you to include fades, transitions, and other effects.

● In non-linear editing, the original source files are not lost or modified during audio and video editing. 

● Loss of quality is also avoided due to not having to repeatedly re-encode the data when different effects are applied. This is the reason why the demand for non-linear video editors is high in the film and video industry.

Different editing software may have similar or slightly different function tools, transitions/effects, correction/adjustments and outputting controls but the techniques of editing remain almost same.

VARIOUS TYPES OF TECHNIQUES

1. Continuity Editing Approach:

● Continuity editing approach supports the logical, smooth and seamless progression of the story. According to this approach, viewers should not feel any jerk or distraction while watching a film or any television programme.

● As an editor we have two major challenges. First, to tell the whole story within the time limit of the film or programme, and second, to present the story in such a way that viewers should find it seamless without any visual or psychological jerks or distractions.
 
2. Parallel Editing

● This is sometimes also termed as cross-cutting. It is an editing technique which is used to cut between shots of two or more actions or events. It suggests that these actions are going on at different places, generally at the same time.

● Cross-cutting includes more than one shot which are used simultaneously to link the story together. It can be used to show the two sides of a story.
 
3. Montage Editing

● In this editing technique, a series of different types of short shots are put together in a sequence, generally to compress the time and space. Montage Editing is almost opposite to the continuity editing.

● It may also be used to Editing give viewer a sense of overall summary of the story with different shots. Montage can be used to create dynamic rhythm in a scene.
 
4. Video Transitions

● We use video transitions to connect two shots one after the other. They provide the viewers with a seamless and smooth visual experience that is the base of continuity editing approach.

● Cut is the most basic but most powerful and maximum used transition. Fade, dissolve, wipe, slide, page peel, iris, etc. are other popular transitions. Transitions are used in audio also. You should always use video transitions with a purpose.
