The 2024-2027 batch was given Internal Assessment to hone their reporting skills through immersive field experiences, culminating in diverse media projects on 19 February 2025. Fifty students, divided into six groups, ventured into iconic Delhi and surrounding locations, including Amrit Udyan, Aadi Mahotsav, National Zoological Park, Surajkund Mela, India Habitat Centre, and Chandni Chowk, to produce bulletins, documentaries, and interviews. 

Students captured the vibrant tapestry of Delhi's cultural and social landscape through their chosen mediums.  Through interviews, documentaries, and bulletins, the students brought these experiences to life, demonstrating their ability to observe, analyze, and report on diverse environments.

VN KI Paathshala

October 4, 2023: Visit to the India Urban Observatory, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs

In an attempt to understand public planning and urban policy, third-year students of Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College visited the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, New Delhi. Twenty-five students were accompanied by the faculty of the department, Dr. Vartika Nanda and Dr. Violet Burman. Ms. Rashi and Ms. Grace were the assigned guides for the visit.

The journalism students had a sit-down session with Mr. Rajeev Jain, ADG of PIB, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. He briefed them on various projects undertaken by the Ministry, with a major emphasis on the Smart Cities Mission and housing projects around the country.

It was an interactive meeting, with students enthusiastically asking questions about traffic management, housing, sustainable transportation alternatives, encroachment, waste management and other topics. They also discussed various missions and analysed their pros and cons.

The students were then escorted to the India Urban Observatory and introduced to the team behind the Smart Cities Mission. A descriptive presentation followed on the agency's vision, structure, function and projects. The presentation included data-intensive facts and visuals about several successful city projects, such as Coimbatore, Indore, Vishakhapatnam, and Kohima. They were also informed about internship and fellowship programs promoted by the Ministry to foster youth leadership and maximise participation. The role of ICCCs during the pandemic was also discussed at length.

The visit ended with a quick question-and-answer session where the final-year students actively inquired about various themes, such as the challenges faced by the mission, the process of resource allocation to cities, alternative problem-solving mechanisms and the criteria for selection as a smart city.

The department excursion achieved its goal as the in-depth discussions and insights helped expose the batch to urban planning and management.

This interview is about Jaisila Bajaj, an alumna of Lady Shri Ram College for Women who completed her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism honours. Art of doing an interview: Class Assignment: REP: Batch of 2026

Paper: Reporting and Editing for Print 

Semester: 2 

The activity: 

This activity was given to the batch of 2026( current first years) as part of Reporting and Editing for Print (REP) practical exercise under Dr. Vartika Nanda’s supervision. She heads the Department of Journalism at LSR. This was part of her innovative pedagogy, emphasizing teaching-learning through practical exercise. 

Since the curriculum includes the 'art of interviewing in print media', it was a golden opportunity for students to put their learnt skills into practice with an on-ground interview. This activity was given on 3rd of May, 2023.The class was elated to push their boundaries and try something totally different and new.

The Purpose : 

The objective behind this activity was to bring the unheard stories of our unsung heroes into focus. The aim was also to sensitize students about the struggles of these unsung heroes and their journey.

Role Of New Education Policy in facilitating such practical assignments:

The detailed emphasis on practical knowledge had been made possible by the reformed education policy introduced by the central government in 2020 under New Education Policy (NEP).

The Process:  

The class divided themselves into groups of 2 or 3 for this task and brainstormed about the interview process and most importantly decided their respective interviewees. This was a challenging task as the students also had to take into consideration the interviewee's availability and time commitments for smooth conduction of interview.Then, the concerned interviewee and questions had to be approved from Dr. Vartika Nanda. A deadline was then unanimously decided by the class for the submission of a rough draft of questions.

The class was given sufficient time for the successful completion of the activity. The entire class, a strength of 34, worked diligently to submit their interviews by 26th May, 2023.

This was a group activity with 10 groups in total.

Impact:  

The students thoroughly enjoyed framing the questions, combining them in a cohesive whole and then putting them out in front of the interviewee and lastly,transcribing it. The activity turned out to be very insightful for the students as it taught  them the required and crucial journalistic skills.

Documentation: 

All these interviews will become part of VNkiPaathshala on both www. Vartikananda.com  and the blog www.vartikananda.blogspot.com. This will help the alumni and the new students to look at the work done in the department.  This will also help the college to showcase the talent of students during the NAAC visit.

Batch of 2023: Workshop on Using Canva for Graphic Design

The second-year students (Batch of 2023), Department of Journalism Lady Shri Ram College for Women attended a workshop ‘How to Use Canva for Graphic Design' on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. The workshop was taken by Ms. Barsha Das, the Design Head of Team Prakriti, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Ms. Barsha is a student in the Department of Economics and harbors wide experience and expertise in Canva and other digital editing tools. 

The workshop was aimed at enabling students with digital editing & basic illustration and graphic designing skills required by the industry in the online learning mode. 

The use of Canva as a tool to design beautiful invitations, instagram posts, creative posters, powerpoint presentations, among other visual illustrations has helped usher in a revolution for budding designers inculcating extensive photo editing knowledge at a very low cost. The workshop, thus, focused on all aspects of visual editing, from the very basic tools to professional editing hacks and techniques explained in a step by step manner making the information easier to grasp for the students. 

Ms. Barsha went through almost all the features of photo editing through Canva. She also took the time to patiently address all the doubts raised by the students.

The workshop proved to be very interactive, helpful and informative. All the students were grateful to Dr. Vartika Nanda (Teacher-in-Charge) for organizing the insightful and most relevant workshop.

Freedom of Expression: Part 2

PAPER: MEDIA ETHICS AND LAW

The Second Year Batch of the Department of Journalism further extended their discussion on ‘Media Ethics and Law’, specifically reflecting on the Freedom of Expression. Discussion was done on the need for restrictions under particular cases of Freedom of Expression. Under Article 19(2) of the Constitution of India, these situations have been characterized as imposing ‘reasonable restrictions’ wherever necessary for the security of the state in general. These are - in terms of Decency and Morality, Contempt of Court, Defamation, Incitement to an offense and Sovereignty and Integrity of the State. 

Concluding with the modern world Right to freedom of speech and expression is not limited to expressing one's view through words but it also includes circulating one's views in writing or through audiovisual instrumentalities, through advertisements and through any other communication channel. At the last, we discussed reasonable restrictions in countries like India and the United States of America. The discussion also revolved around the importance of freedom of speech and the relevance of the set topic.  The lecture was attended by 16 students with active participation. 

Assignment on Cartoons

On 20th August, 2019, our professor, Dr.Vartika Nanda, initiated an innovative way to explore the role of cartoons in print media. She assigned us to work on a research paper through which we acquired an in depth knowledge of how cartoons impact the news making process and influence the society at large.

The activity started with us forming four separate groups. But before we could start working as a team, Ma'am essentially ensured that each of us had a clear vision of the activity and its goal.

In the process of research, our horizons expanded as we delved into the world of cartoons! We studied its history, characteristics, relevance in print journalism, transformation of cartoons with the technological advancement, famous cartoonists and their contribution, action against cartoonists and lastly the declining presence of cartoons in the print media.

Critical analysis, group discussion, smart usage of the internet and effective strategies to master the art of paper writing, its methodology and presentation; these are a few elements that we inculcated through the self-teaching and learning process.

Once class assignments were read, we submitted them to Dr. Nanda after which she did a thorough evaluation and gave her significant inputs, pointed our fallacies and advised us as to how we can improve our writing style and enhance our creativity.

On the whole, it was indeed a crucial step taken by Ma'am towards instilling in us the power of team work and allowing us to write our assignment on such a fascinating topic!

Newspaper Making Assignment

2019: August:

A ‘Newspaper Making Exercise’ was organized on 28 August 2019 in Lady Shri Ram College by Department of Journalism. All forty-one- first-year journalism students were a part of the elucidative practical exercise given by Dr.Vartika Nanda, Head of Department. The exercise was an innovative pedagogical practice, a part of Introduction of Journalism paper that helped promote the involvement of students, improved critical and creative thinking, and contributed to peer-learning.

During the exercise, the class was divided into four groups of approximately ten students in each. Group A was given the theme ‘Good and Positive News’. Group A included Anushree Mukherjee, Prakriti Bhanot, Sanya Arora, Ananya Goel, Harshita Solanki, Himani Jindal, Soumyaa Ratwal, Riya Mohan, Disha, Ishwar, and Utkarsha.  Group B was given the theme ‘Bad News’. Members of Group B are Shreya G., Malak, Muskan Singh, Anjali, Palomi, Deepika, Riya Verma, Hania, Monika, Samridhi and Muskan Verma. Group C had the theme ‘Political News’, its members are Sonal, Surbhi, Arya Krishnan, Soumya Jain, Komal, Pranathi, Parvathy, Apurva, Cheshtha and Agrima. Lastly, Group D was given the theme ‘Social News’ and the members of this group are Akshita Chugh, Drishti, Vasudha, Gaurvi, Nandani, Devika Jain, Nandini Gautam, Sukriti Taneja, Arunima and Shivangi. 

The students were given instructions to design their newspapers keeping in mind the fundamentals of newspaper making. Students commenced the exercise by deciding upon the number of pages for the newspaper, further they thought of suitable names for their respective newspapers pertaining to the theme given to them. They took the help of various newspapers of both Hindi and English language, to collect articles for their newspapers. Further, they classified collected articles into various sections as per the newspaper like National News, Sports News, and Infotainment News, etc. After classification, they had to start composing their newspapers by pasting the cutouts of articles as per the theme on chart papers.

The objective of this exercise was to make students realize the hard work and labor that goes into designing of a newspaper. It was also a way to promote team spirit in the students. This exercise also gave an insight to the students about the inner workings of making a newspaper. An interactive concourse ignited the inquisitiveness of students on newspaper making. All the students participated in this exercise with immense enthusiasm and zeal.

In the end, all the four newspapers were presented in the class by the respective group members. All the four groups narrated their newspaper making experience and provided some great insights about what they learned throughout the activity. A general conclusion that was observed was that finding the bad news was rather easier in the columns of the esteemed dailies, however finding good and positive news was a challenging and tedious task. A group photo of all the students with their newspapers was also clicked in the end. Overall, the students had a lot of fun in the exercise and was also a great learning experience for them which they all took part in wholeheartedly.
