Background: Professor (Dr.) Vartika Nanda is an academic by profession, a journalist by vocation and a prison reformer by passion. She has used the best practices of journalism and academia for studying and contributing to prison reforms. Her accolades include Stri Shakti Puraskar by President of India, twice mentioned in Limca book of Records and cognizance by the Supreme Court of India.

As the founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, she has tirelessly worked for improving the conditions in India’s prisons,  including the introduction of prison radio in District Jail, Agra, District Jail, Dehradun  and the jails of Haryana. She is the curator of Tinka Tinka India and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards which are the only such awards in the country for jail inmates.

She has worked extensively with Tihar (Delhi), District Jail of Ghaziabad and Agra (Uttar Pradesh), jails of Madhya Pradesh and jails of Haryana. Her research on the “Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh” was  evaluated as ‘outstanding’ by ICSSR  in 2021. It was released by the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh in 2024.

She has authored four books on prisons, latest being- RADIO IN PRISONS, published by National Book Trust, India in 2024. These books are authentic versions of prison life.  

She has introduced the concept of constructive journalism in jails, with a blend of academia and affirmative action, helping in fulfilling communication and creative needs of inmates. 

Her Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts are the only podcasts in India, providing an outlet to voices from prisons. She is also the official storyteller for Delhi Police for their podcasts- Kissa Khaki Ka. Her podcast THEE..HOON..RAHUNGI…deals with stories of hope and courage. She is called the VOICE OF DELHI POLICE for her regular podcast series with Delhi Police titled KISSA KHAKI KA- the only podcast series by any police department in India. 

Vartika has worked with Zee News, NDTV, Lok Sabha TV and Sahara India. She was the first Executive Producer of Lok Sabha TV, first woman reporter in India to head crime beat on electronic media and the youngest TV anchor in the early eighties on DD Jalandhar. 

Her academic career started with IIMC as Associate Professor. She has done her doctorate on coverage of rape cases by media. 

Currently, she heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
