1.1 Topics Covered :
• Definitions and meaning of Journalism.
• What is news, ingredients and nature of news with examples.
1.2 Assignments given :
i) Practical Assignments
• Make a video, not more than 7 minutes, on your journey in LSR so far.
• Submission date: 11th August. Group leaders: Group A – Pritha, Group B – Ananya, Group C – Riya, Group D – Janya.
• Research and write at least 800 words on the meaning and definition of journalism, ingredients of news, and the meaning, definition and nature of news.
ii) Lecture Assignments
• TOPIC: meaning and definition of Journalism and news, ingredients and types of news.
• Write 80–150 words about your experience in LSR till now and post it on the class blog.
3rd August (Monday)
• Write 80–150 words about your experience in LSR till now and post it on the class blog.
• Research and write at least 800 words in the assignment notebook on the meaning and definition of journalism, ingredients of news, and the meaning, definition and nature of news.
5th August (Wednesday)
• Read about the meaning, nature and ingredients of news from the blog
• post a comment on what we learnt.
2. Week: 11th August – 15th August
2.1 Topics Covered
• Hard news vs soft news with examples of each.
• Explanation of attribution, Difference between on-the-record and off-the-record.
• Discussion on balance, fairness and objectivity in news.
• Embargo
2.2 Assignments Given
i) Practical Assignments
• Prepare a 4–8 page newsletter on the topics covered so far in the syllabus. Submission date: 19th August.
• Research on embargo – completed by Janya, Devanshi, Prachee, Ananya Sachdeva and Nishika.
• Summary on hard news and soft news – prepared by Ananya Patel.
ii) Lecture Assignment : 14th August (Friday)
• Research on balance, fairness and objectivity, and write about it in the practical notebook in not less than 500 words.
3. Week 15th August- 22nd August
2.1 Topics Covered
• Continuation of discussion on balance, fairness and objectivity.
• Submission & Analysis of newsletter.
• Explanation on Criteria for selection of news worthiness
• Principles of selection of news
• Discussion on the Use of Internet in News
2.2 Assignments Given
i) Practical Assignments
• Conduct a research on the topics Criteria for News Worthiness, Principles of news selection and Basic Components of a news story in the practical notebook in about 800 words.
ii) Lecture Assignment :
Read about the next topics which are to be discussed in class.
Every team has to write a report introducing their newsletter and describing their learnings from the assignment.
