New Radio Jockeys To Be Introduced In Haryana Jails; Tinka Tinka Foundation Will Give Training To Inmates
Three jails in Haryana are all set to get a new set of
Radio Jockeys to work with the in-house prison radio station. Auditions for the
selection of these three jails have been conducted by Dr. Vartika Nanda,
Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation and the brain behind prison radios in
the state of Haryana. Three jails that have been chosen for the next
phase of prison radio training are- Central Jail, Ambala, District Jail
Jind and District Jail Kurukshetra. 15 inmates from these jails are
now getting ready to receive the training.
Purpose of Prison Radio
Purpose of inhouse prison radio is to give inmates the
opportunity for better communication, to give them an additional skill and also
to reduce depression and aggression among them. Jail radios give them a
creative engagement and the opportunity to fill ‘empty’ time in jai.
The backgrounder
Jail Radio is a new initiative undertaken by Tinka
Tinka Foundation, a Public Charitable Trust working on the reformation of
prisons through creative means like art, media, culture and literature. Jail
Radio has been working to promote the hidden skills of the inmates through art
and creativity. It is a new mode to reveal their talent to the world.
BRUT released a special film in January this year to
highlight the endeavor of Tinka Tinka Foundation in bringing reformation among
jail inmates through jail radio. The documentary was shot in the premises of
District Jail, Panipat. This is the first time that a video is shot in the
prison to document prison radio.
Brainchild behind this prison movement
Inmates are being auditioned, trained and prepared for broadcasts by prison reformer Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation. She is the head of Department of Journalism at Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. She is the author of 3 books on prison reforms that are considered to be masterpieces of prison reforms in India.
