1. Voices of Transformation in Jind’s District Jail

INDIA: In the heart of Haryana’s small industrial town of Jind, four inmates—Jai Bhagwan, Sunil, Kuldeep, and Anil—share two significant things in common. They are all incarcerated in District Jail, Jind, and they serve as radio jockeys for Tinka Jail Radio, a unique initiative that is transforming lives within the prison walls. Jind’s District Jail is one of 13 jails in Haryana equipped with its own radio station, a beacon of hope in a state with 20 jails in total.

These four men arrived in prison at different times, each with varied educational backgrounds and no prior experience in radio. Like many inmates, they initially struggled with depression and the challenge of filling endless, empty hours. However, their introduction to Tinka Jail Radio marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation.

Jail radio has given them a constructive way to spend their time, channeling their energies into creative endeavors. It has not only provided them with a meaningful activity but also helped them gain a respectable identity within the jail. Moreover, it has offered a platform to showcase and hone their singing talents. In a recent episode of Tinka Jail Radio, broadcast on YouTube on June 10, 2024, these inmates shared how the radio station has helped them make friends and find solace. This episode was aptly aired on National Friendship Day.

“When I came to the jail, I found the atmosphere unsettling. I did not know anyone. Gradually, I started making friends. The introduction of Tinka Jail Radio helped me to have new friends in the jail,” Jai Bhagwan, an inmate, radio jockey, and singer, remarked during the episode.

For Jai Bhagwan and his fellow inmates, the jail radio has become a trustworthy companion and a vital communication platform. It has immense potential to positively impact their lives, providing a sense of connection and community.

Kuldeep, another inmate who joined the jail in July 2023, as an undertrial, shared his experience: “I was not able to adjust myself to the new environment until I was acquainted with Tinka Jail Radio. I have made friends with Jai Bhagwan and many others. Now, I sing on the jail radio and feel better than before”.

Launched on January 1, 2023, Jail Radio in Haryana aims to motivate inmates towards literacy and education, enhance their creative skills, reduce depression, and foster a positive prison environment. Broadcasting for five hours each day, the content on Tinka Jail Radio focuses on education, information, and entertainment, creating a comprehensive and uplifting experience for its listeners.

The success of Tinka Jail Radio in Jind’s District Jail highlights the power of creative engagement and human connection. It proves that even in the most challenging circumstances, initiatives like jail radio can nurture hope and facilitate personal growth. Jai Bhagwan, Sunil, Kuldeep, and Anil’s stories are testaments to the transformative potential of this program, showing that with the right support, inmates can find purpose and build meaningful lives, even behind bars.

2. Amplifying Change: The Resonance of Hope Through Karnal Jail’s Radio Waves

INDIA: In the cacophony of prison life, where solitude is a constant companion and hope often feels like a distant dream, one man found a symphony of change through the crackle of a radio mic. Ashok, a 56-year-old with a degree in mass communication, never imagined that his aspirations of broadcasting would find fulfillment amidst the confines of Karnal Jail in Haryana. Yet, against the backdrop of incarceration, he became not just a radio jockey but a beacon of transformation, weaving tales of progress and empowerment through the airwaves.

The day Ashok entered Karnal Jail in 2019 marked the beginning of an unexpected journey. Struggling with loneliness and uncertainty, his yearning for purpose led him to the jail’s radio station. There, amidst the steel bars and concrete walls, he discovered a platform to share stories, uplift spirits, and foster change. With each broadcast, Ashok’s voice reverberated, not just as a DJ but as a catalyst for hope.

Beyond spinning tracks and singing folk songs, Ashok embraced a role of profound significance within the prison community. Recognizing the power of education to break the chains of incarceration, he took on the responsibility of urging inmates to pursue higher learning opportunities. In a prison housing over 2,000 individuals, Ashok’s announcements echoed with urgency, encouraging his fellow inmates to seize the chance for personal growth and redemption.

Karnal Jail’s Symphony of Transformation: Ashok’s Radio Advocacy Sparks Inmate Empowerment

Through the jail radio’s persistent reminders, Ashok catalyzed a shift in mindset, with nearly 90% of inmates heeding his call to attend classes and pursue education. His advocacy extended beyond the confines of Karnal Jail, as he became an integral part of the Tinka Prison Research Cell, delving into the impact of jail radio and envisioning its future potential.

The establishment of prison radios spearheaded by the Tinka Tinka Foundation across Haryana reflects a broader commitment to rehabilitative justice. From Panipat to Jind, these initiatives signal a departure from punitive measures towards a more humane approach to incarceration. As the political landscape of India shifts with ongoing elections, the plight of inmates often remains overlooked. Yet, individuals like Ashok exemplify resilience and determination, striving to carve out identities and instigate meaningful change within the prison walls.

In Karnal Jail, amidst the static of societal indifference, Ashok’s voice resonates with possibility. Through the radio waves, he amplifies not just music but the collective yearning for redemption and renewal. In a world where hope is often in short supply, his story serves as a reminder that even within the darkest of circumstances, the melody of change can still be heard.

3. Echoes of Redemption: Tinka Tinka Jail Radio Transforms Lives Behind Bars

INDIA: In the heart of District Jail Karnal, Haryana, where the echoes of confinement reverberate, lies the tale of Sonia, a resilient woman whose journey behind bars spans over two decades. Enduring the solitude of solitary confinement, Sonia’s prolonged incarceration manifested in heightened aggression and mental turmoil.

However, amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, a beacon of hope emerged. As prisons tightened their restrictions, the Tinka Tinka Foundation (TTF) embarked on a groundbreaking endeavor – introducing jail radios across Haryana. These in-house radio stations, with inmates as participants and audiences, provided a lifeline of connectivity within prison walls.

As auditions and training for the jail radio unfolded, Sonia, with unwavering determination, seized the opportunity to become a radio jockey. Her dedication earned her the admiration of fellow inmates and the prestigious Tinka Tinka Bandini Award in 2021, recognizing her remarkable contribution to the jail radio.

While Delhi Prisons (Tihar) pioneered prison radio in 2013, Haryana’s entry into this domain in 2020 marked a significant milestone. With 10 jails now equipped with radio stations, including Karnal, the state has embraced a transformative approach to rehabilitation.

Today, Sonia is an integral part of Tinka Jail Radio and Tinka Podcasts, dedicated solely to prison reforms in India. In a poignant revelation during an interview in 2022, she expressed newfound peace, attributing it to the influence of jail radio in her life.

March heralded another milestone as the Tinka Tinka Foundation released a report analyzing the impact of jail radio on inmates. The findings underscored its pivotal role in addressing mental health issues, with 74% of respondents citing improved stress management.

As the research unveiled the diverse preferences of inmates, from music therapy to agricultural insights, it illuminated the profound impact of prison radio on rehabilitation. With 52% experiencing positive life changes and 80% satisfied with programming, the transformative power of jail radio is undeniable.

In Karnal Jail, where overcrowding is a reality, the Tinka Tinka Research Cell (TRC) conducts ongoing research to enhance prison radio’s effectiveness. As Sonia and countless others rewrite their narratives through the prison microphone, they embody the spirit of resilience and redemption in India’s evolving landscape of incarceration.

4. “Tinka Tinka Tihar”: A Journey of Redemption Through Poetry Behind Bars

INDIA: In the heart of Tihar’s women jail number 6, Aarti, a 35-year-old life-term inmate, has found solace and redemption through the power of poetry. Her story, etched in the verses of “Tinka Tinka Tihar,” a compilation of poems by women inmates, reflects a journey from despair to hope within the confines of India’s largest prison complex.

Aarti’s life took a tragic turn in 2011, leading her to incarceration. Despite the challenges, she refused to be defined by her circumstances. The emotional turmoil of prison life, coupled with familial struggles, pushed her to seek an outlet for her thoughts and emotions.

In 2013, Aarti became a part of a unique initiative, a project aimed at harnessing the literary potential of women inmates. “Tinka Tinka Tihar” became a testament to resilience and creativity, showcasing the literary prowess of four women, including Aarti.

The impact of the project extended beyond the pages of the book. One poignant example is the mural painting outside Tihar prison, depicting the poem ‘Chaardeewaari’ written by Seema, another contributor to the book. The mural, released by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, is the longest in India and symbolizes the unspoken emotions of incarcerated love.

Aarti’s personal growth is evident in her pursuit of education within the prison walls. Completing over six courses, including journalism and tourism, she transformed into the jail’s librarian under Superintendent Krishna Sharma.

As “Tinka Tinka Tihar” celebrates a decade, Aarti stands as a living testament to the transformative power of art and expression. Despite the challenges, she wears her new identity proudly – a poet, singer, lyricist, and librarian, offering hope to others behind bars.

Her daughter’s achievements outside the prison walls and the recognition of the book’s anniversary have added new chapters to Aarti’s story of redemption. In a unique celebration within Tihar, Aarti, now an integral part of the jail’s cultural activities, enacts the role of the Superintendent, embodying the resilience that defines her journey.

Aarti’s narrative is a testament to the indomitable spirit that can thrive even in the harshest of environments. As she continues to inspire others, the power of the pen becomes a beacon of hope within the confines of Tihar.
