Agra Jail Radio completed FIVE YEARS ON 31 July, 2024

“आज 31 जुलाई, 2024 को हम आगरा जेल रेडियो के 5 वर्ष पूरे कर रहे हैं। आज ही के दिन 2019 में ‌ तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन की डॉ . वर्तिका नन्दा जी के प्रयासों से जेल रेडियो की शुरुआत की गई। यह कार्यक्रम बंदियों के लिए बंदियों द्वारा संचालित किया जाता है। इस कार्यक्रम का संचालन रेडियो जॉकी के रूप में बंदियों द्वारा ही किया जाता है। यह एक ऐसा कार्यक्रम है जिसने कोरोना जैसी महामारी में, जब लगभग 11 महीने देश के जिलों में मुलाकात बंद रही, बंदियों को अवसाद से निकलने में अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई । आज भी इस कार्यक्रम का संचालन 2 घंटे निश्चित रूप से किया जाता है। इस कार्यक्रम के माध्यम से बंदियों का न केवल स्वस्थ मनोरंजन होता है एवं उनमें रचनात्मकता का भी विकास हो रहा है । इस कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत प्रतिदिन मनोरंजन के अलावा हम शनिवार के दिन प्रश्न पहर का भी कार्यक्रम आयोजित करते हैं। इसके अंतर्गत उन्हें लीगल एड एवं हेल्थ के बारे में भी प्रदान की जाती है। आने वाले समय में हम इसको और अधिक उपयोगी बनाने के लिए अन्य बंदियों को भी प्रशिक्षित कर रहे हैं और साथ ही अन्य आयाम भी इसमें जोड़ने का भी कार्य कर रहे हैं ।”

Marking Five Years of Support for Inmates through Radio

A magic entered the oldest jail building in India exactly five years ago in the form of the jail radio. It was this day today when Babloo Kumar SSP, Shashikant Mishra, Jail Superintendent, and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Tinka Tinka Foundation inaugurated the prison radio. Conceptualized and trained by media educator and prison reformer Dr. Vartika Nanda, this radio soon became the lifeline of inmates. Run by inmates, for the inmates, prison radio is a recent concept in India. The radio soon became a source of inspiration and support during Covid-19 pandemic. In the absence of visitations, it was this radio that worked towards helping inmates deal with the state of depression.

Who were the radio jockeys

At the time of the launch, female inmate Tuhina, a graduate from IIM Bangalore, and male inmate Uday, a postgraduate, were made radio jockeys. Later, another inmate, Rajat, joined them. Expansion and new plans

“Presently the prison radio runs everyday for two hours. We are now planning to increase the duration. We also intend to increase the number of radio jockeys. The next round of selection of inmates for the jail radio will start shortly.”

“The success of this prison radio helped us to conceptualise prison radio in the state of Haryana and in District Jail, Dehradun in Uttarakhand. These radios are based on Tinka Model of Prison Radio These are the only systematic prison radios available in the Indian jails. It is a matter of pride that this action oriented research was done during the period of 2019-20 and was evaluated outstanding by ICSSR. We are planning to bring the findings of this research into the public domain very soon.”

The radio established in the District Jail, Agra, built during the Mughal era in 1741, has become a lifeline for inmates.

History and capacity of the jail

This jail building was initially built during the reign of the 12th Mughal Emperor Mohammed Shah Gazi in the year 1741 A.D. (Hijri 1154). It was built by Mir Wazir-ud-din Khan Mukhtab and Mir Jalal-ud-din for the rest and recuperation of pilgrims going for Haj. Over the course of time, this premises was converted into a jail. Initially, District Jail Agra had a capacity of holding 706 inmates which was later increased to 1015. The holding capacity at present is 1135 inmates.

Jail Radio and the research:

Vartika Nanda’s recent research on the "Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh" has been evaluated as OUTSTANDING by ICSSR. She has established prison radios in the jails of Haryana and in District Jail, Dehradun in Uttarakhand.

भारत की सबसे पुरानी जेल में जेल रेडियो ने 5 साल पूरे किए

जिला जेल आगरा में जेल रेडियो 31 जुलाई 2019 को शुरू किया गया।

कोविड-19 के दौरान कैदियों को विशेष रूप से बड़ी मदद मिली।

इससे प्रेरित होकर उत्तर प्रदेश ने अन्य जेलों में भी जेल रेडियो शुरू करने का निर्णय लिया।

कैदियों का चयन और प्रशिक्षण जेल सुधारक वर्तिका नन्दा द्वारा किया गया।

जल्द ही कैदियों के नए बैच का चयन और प्रशिक्षण शुरू होगा।

कैदियों के लिए रेडियो के माध्यम से पांच साल

भारत की सबसे पुरानी जेल में ठीक पांच साल पहले जेल रेडियो के रूप में एक जादू ने प्रवेश किया था। आज के दिन ही बब्लू कुमार, एसएसपी, शशिकांत मिश्रा, जेल अधीक्षक और डॉ. वर्तिका नन्दा, संस्थापक, तिनका तिनका फाउंडेशन ने जेल रेडियो का उद्घाटन किया था। मीडिया शिक्षक और जेल सुधारक डॉ. वर्तिका नन्दा द्वारा परिकल्पित और प्रशिक्षित यह रेडियो जल्द ही कैदियों की जीवनरेखा बन गई। कैदियों द्वारा, कैदियों के लिए चलाया जाने वाला जेल रेडियो भारत में एक नई अवधारणा है। कोविड-19 महामारी के दौरान रेडियो जल्द ही प्रेरणा और समर्थन का स्रोत बन गया। मुलाकातों की अनुपस्थिति में, इस रेडियो ने अवसाद की स्थिति से निपटने में कैदियों की मदद की।

रेडियो जॉकी कौन थे

लॉन्च के समय, महिला कैदी तुहिना, जो आईआईएम बैंगलोर से स्नातक थीं, और पुरुष कैदी उदय, जो परास्नातक थे, को रेडियो जॉकी बनाया गया। बाद में, एक और कैदी, रजत, उनसे जुड़ गए। तुहिना उत्तर प्रदेश की जेलों में पहली महिला रेडियो जॉकी बनीं। रेडियो के लिए स्क्रिप्ट्स खुद कैदियों द्वारा तैयार की जाती हैं।

नई घोषणा

जिला जेल, आगरा में जेल रेडियो हर दिन दो घंटे चलता है। समय बढ़ाने और नए कैदियों के एक सेट को रेडियो जॉकी के रूप में तैयार करने का निर्णय लिया गया है।

“वर्तमान में जेल हर दिन लगभग दो घंटे चलती है, हम समय बढ़ाने की योजना बना रहे हैं, हम अगले दौर के चयन से इस कार्य के लिए कैदियों की संख्या बढ़ाने की भी योजना बना रहे हैं।” हरिओम शर्मा, सुपरिटेंडेट, जिला जेल, आगरा

“इस जेल रेडियो की सफलता ने हमें हरियाणा की जेलों और जिला जेल, देहरादून उत्तराखंड में जेल रेडियो को स्थापित करने के लिए प्रेरित किया। ये रेडियो तिनका मॉडल ऑफ प्रिज़न रेडियो पर आधारित हैं और ये भारतीय जेलों के एकमात्र व्यवस्थित जेल रेडियो हैं। यह गर्व की बात है कि उत्तर प्रदेश की जेलों पर किए गए शोद में यह जिला जेल, आगरा प्रमुख रही। इसे 2019-20 की अवधि के दौरान किया गया था और ICSSR द्वारा इस काम को उत्कृष्ट माना गया। हम इस शोध के निष्कर्षों को जल्द ही सार्वजनिक करेंगे।”

जेल का इतिहास और क्षमता

यह जेल भवन 12वें मुगल सम्राट मोहम्मद शाह गाजी के शासनकाल के दौरान 1741 ईस्वी (हिजरी 1154) में मीर वज़ीर-उद-दीन खान मुख्ताब और मीर जलाल-उद-दीन द्वारा हज जाने वाले तीर्थयात्रियों के विश्राम के लिए बनाया गया था। समय के साथ इस परिसर का उपयोग जेल के रूप में किया जाने लगा। स्थापना के समय जिला जेल, आगरा की क्षमता 706 कैदियों को रखने की थी जिसे बाद में बढ़ाकर 1015 कर दिया गया।

जेल रेडियो और अनुसंधान

वर्तिका नन्दा के "भारतीय जेलों में महिला कैदियों और उनके बच्चों की स्थिति और उनके संचार की जरूरतों का अध्ययन, विशेष रूप से उत्तर प्रदेश के संदर्भ में" पर हालिया शोध को ICSSR द्वारा उत्कृष्ट के रूप में मूल्यांकित किया गया है। उन्होंने हरियाणा की जेलों और जिला जेल, देहरादून में जेल रेडियो स्थापित किए हैं। वे दिल्ली के लेडी श्रीराम कॉलेज में पत्रकारिता विभाग की प्रमुख हैं। तिनका तिनका जेलों में सृजन और बेहतर कामों को प्रोत्साहित करने की उनकी मुहिम है। जेलों पर लिखी उनकी किताबें भारतीय जेलों पर प्रामाणिक दस्तावेज मानी जाती हैं। www.tinkatinka.org हाल में उनकी लिखी किताब- तिनका तिनका तिहाड़ ने 12 वर्ष पूरे गए।
