DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM
Lady Shri Ram College for Women
Paper: Reporting and Editing for Print
Semester: 2
Class Report (23.06.2023, Friday)
On 2nd June 2023, a guest lecture was conducted by the Department of Journalism for the current first years (batch 2025/26) on the paper Reporting and Editing For Print.
Vaishnavi Kanugula, a consultant by profession and alumni of the department was invited to address the students on the topic 'voyeurism' covered under UNIT 3: 'Issues and trends in news reporting'.
This concept is of extreme importance for media students as voyeurism is in a direct clash with journalistic ethics and integrity. The lecture started with familiarizing the students with the concept by breaking it down into simple understandable terms.
Ms. Vaishnavi elaborated Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, the renowned English filmmaker's famous work 'Rear Window' to elucidate the concept better. 'Rear Window' is a mystery thriller film that talks about a wheelchair-bound photographer's voyeurism as he spies on his neighbors from his apartment window.
A detailed discussion followed on voyeurism in India and worldwide, some contemporary examples made the class ponder the almost blurred boundaries between paparazzi and voyeurism in the current media space. The lecture made the class realize how voyeurism is a 'sensationalizing tragedy'. She also explained some related concepts like upskirting while also elaborating on how the ramifications and legal actions on voyeurism are still being contemplated.
Ms. Vaishnavi also gave students numerous valuable tips to make the most of their college years along with some great insights into the professional world.
