Soul search: How poems of four Tihar jail inmates will soon inspire Yerwada women inmates: Yerwada Jail, Maharashtra: 2018

Poems by Tihar Jail Inmates
Location: Yerwada Jail, Maharashtra
Year: 2018

The poems were written by four inmates lodged in the women’s jail of Tihar,  Seema Raghuvanshi, Aarti, Rama Chauhan and Riya Sharma. These poems reflect their thoughts on soul searching, inmates yearning for their family, emotions and life in prison.

Providing an insight into their lives, four women inmates of Tihar jail wrote 150 poems that have been compiled into a book called Tinka Tinka Tihar, released in Hindi and English. The book has been translated into Marathi, giving women inmates of Yerwada jail the opportunity to go through women inmates lodged in the other corner of the country. The Marathi edition was released by Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhayay, Director General of Prisons, Maharashtra, on April 21, 2018 at the women’s prison in Yerwada.
The Marathi version of the book has been published by Mehta Publications and translated by Marathi author Manjiri Dhamankar.Mehta Publications has published the Marathi version of Tinka Tinka Tihar that has found a place in the 2015 Limca Book of Records. The original book was edited by Vartika Nanda and Vimla Mehra, (IPS), Director General  (DG), Delhi Prisons. This book found a respectable space in Limca Book of Records in 2015. This unique project is the brainchild of India's leading prison reformer Dr. Vartika Nanda. Her other two books, Tinka Tinka Dasna and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh are also authentic versions on prison life. She said on the occasion," Tinka Tinka Tihar will always be remembered as a pioneering step towards prison reforms. This book led to several innovations, including the thought of introducing prison radios,."
On this occasion, Vartika Nanda said, “ Tinka Tinka will bring out a series of such books from different jails in India.” Dhamankar, the translator said,” This book came to me three years ago and it was one of the most fascinating books of poems. You get a glimpse of what is going on in their minds and their thoughts are similar to that of any common man.  We have a notion about jail and its inmates and often tend to believe that all inmates are criminals. It was while translating these poems that I felt a bond that they are also women who have the same feelings and that the only difference is they are in prison.”
It is the first book of a collection of poems written by selected  women inmates of Tihar jail and was published in English and Hindi by Rajkamal Prakashan. The book was released by the Minister of Home Affairs, at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi in September 2013.

Inmates are just like us, the ones who live in the outside world and the poems in the three books of Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Dasna and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh are evidence to this very notion. Prisons ought to be a place of change, not of punishment and when I come across such articles my belief in the approach of the Tinka Tinka movement that focuses on prison reforms, strengthens further. #vartikananda #tinkatinka #prison #jail

Really inspired by the work of Tinka Tinka on how they are bringing the stories from prisons. Tinka Tinka has been constantly working towards prison reforms and in since last few years they have really managed to bring a lot of stories to the common people. The reforms done by Tinka Tinka is something very less people know about and even very less people have attempted it. The stories about prison inmates from Tinka Tinka book series Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Dasna and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh has its own feel. #tinkatinka #vartikananda #jail

Tinka Tinka Prison reforms have promised to bring colours of rainbow in the lives of inmates. Dr. Vartika Nanda founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation is trying to build a bridge between the jails and society. She is constantly motivating inmates to bring their talent before the world. She is working as catalyst. In this arena she has used various tools. Her journey started with the publication of Tinka Tinka Tihar, a book compilation of poems written by women inmates of Tihar jail. This inspired other inmates too. This book was followed by Tinka Tinka Dasna and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh.

In this innings she focussed on jail radio launched in several jails of Haryana. She auditions selects and train inmates to work as RJs and broadcast radio programmes in their respective jails as per the choice of fellow inmates. She is also providing a platform to inmates for solo performance by way of podcast telecast on various social platform. Translation of Tinka Tinka Tihar in Marathi language helped inmates of Yerwada jail women inmates to raead the poems written by Tihar inmates. The poems is all about the feelings, pains and stress felt by women inmates. When these books will pass through the hands of various inmates, the inspiration to bring out their best will strengthen.
